I am on the site constantly, but only post once in a great while. I have a new foster and need some help. I think he is full cocker, but I am not sure. He is bigger than a cocker and he does not have the slight slope in the back from his head to his bottom. I have posted some pictures (he wouldn't hold still) and if you all could take a look and tell me what you think that would be great. Maybe he is an English Cocker or a Britney. He does have the cocker coat though; before he was shaved he appeared to have the same coat and facial fur as my cockers.

His name is Charlie (just learning his name as he was picked up as a stray). I pulled him from the shelter for the rescue when his time was up. He was so matted he had to be sudated to be shaved and has some sores where the mats were the worse. He is also approximately 7 pounds under weight and the vet said for his frame he should weight between 35 and 40 pounds, that is a big cocker! :goof

Also, Charlie will be on the news in Salt Lake City on Friday to represent the rescue and promote him, the rescue and adopting rescue dogs. So it would be good to have some confindence on if he is a full cocker or mix.

Robyn,
Looking at your pictures, I do not see anything but American Cocker in his face!
Definitely not English or Brittany...their faces are too different from Charlie's.

It is difficult to tell from the pics how tall he is. Maybe there is some Springer
that is giving him the height. Then again, there are many American cockers that
are a bit taller than the standard for conformation and they have the additional
weight as is proportionate.

Regardless, he is a handsome boy and looks very sweet! Hope he gets his
forever home soon! Thanks for fostering!

Thanks Marg! He is cute! He also has a very good personallity: he is sweet, likes other dogs and cats (although he will chase a cat if it runs), wants to be where every the people are, and also likes being a lap dog. He will make a wonderful addition to someones life! :sml

Charlie looks all American cocker to me. In fact he reminds me of my own Charley. He's black and white but has all the ticking that Charlie has. Charley is 36 lbs but not fat at all. And he towers over my 2 female cockers!

Good luck in finding Charlie a furever home! He's very cute :th-up

He's pretty leggy from the look of it, but that head and face look pure American cocker to me!

Yeah! I thought he seemed kind of leggy too, so I just wasn't sure. Although he does have the smooth cocker rounded head. He loves his food, but does a hit and run routine at the bowl. I can't tell if maybe he was with other dogs and had to fight a bit for the food, so he would be in and out real quick before another dog could snap at him or what. :dk He is house broken to a doggy door, but does not like a kennel. He also is like my other cockers and sleeps with me at night and has to be touching me some where on my body all night long. It is pretty hard to get any sleep with 3 dogs surrounding you! :raz At least my lab shepard mix foster chose his own bed in one of the other bedrooms to sleep on!

I see maybe a tiny bit of Beagle/hound in the fur/long legs...a very good mix if he is a mix. Very soulful face.

Tail or nubby? If he has a nubby I'm betting American cocker and a big boy. If he has a full tail maybe mixed :dk

He's has cute as can be whatever he is!

He's adorable! His body almost reminds me of a pointer, but his face looks all cocker. Whatever he is, he's very cute and sounds like he has a great personality. Best wishes for finding him a great home.

His face looks all cocker and might not look so leggy with more weight. Still I think with the ticking I'm wondering if maybe there is a bit of blue tick hound or coon hound in there somewhere. Cute, cute, cute and sounds like he has a lovely personality. How is his bark? If there is some hound in him, perhaps he has that distinctive baying when he's excited or on the trail of something.

He has a 4 inch nubby and he had his dew claws removed, so it makes me think pure bred. :dk He does tend to howl more than bark, which is interesting. It is one of those things where you cannot believe that this wonderful dog was going to be put down. I know he will find his forever home pretty fast with his good looks and personality!

Studying his gait would help determine his breed. The Cocker movement is distinctive as are those of the other spaniel groups. Looking at the photos, that long lean torso would indicate possibly some hound. I would watch him and your cockers together at exercise, walk or play and compare movement. He sounds lovely and a great prospect for a fast forever home. Enjoy while you have him and thanks for fostering!

He's certainly adorable! I have a beagle and cocker at home and I think he might be a cross between the two or at least have some beagle in him. I'm certainly no expert but just a thought. . .

If his tail is docked, I am positive he is pure bred American Cocker Spaniel. The longer body and height are likely the result of not being from show lines. Could be from BYB or mill.

Love love love his color and markings. He reminds me of my friend's boy Kirby who was lost to cancer two years ago.

Just a thought, if Mom was a cocker and dad was a fly by night romance, wouldn't it be possible that a disreputable "breeder" might dock the tail, and remove dew claws to pass the puppies off as purebred.
Not that I think it matters. My heart dog was a Beagle mix from fly by night romance :wink
* edited to clarify, it doesn't matter if he is 100percent cocker, but it would be crappy for a "breeder" to try to pass him off as one.
This boy is darling and I'm sure he will find a family that loves him regardless of pedigree.

Tail or no tail, ticking and all, he looks to be all cocker. BYB or oops litter dogs aren't all docked so the tail shouldn't be a deal breaker regarding his breed. As for the ticking, that too is normal. My black and white is ticked like him and I know where she came from.... yes, she's all cocker. He has a great face and looks to be a nice, nice dog. I hope he gets a fantastic forever home. Thank you for taking him in and giving him a chance at a new life :joy
