I'm happy Walker is doing okay and showing some improvement, but the entire situation still brings me to tears. I LOVE that little "old man face". I so hope he can make a full recovery and play with his brother again!!!!

Good to read the update and see there is progress. Remember, think only positive thoughts - and know baby steps are normal. You and Kim K. (Poppy's mom) are going through this together. Poppy is several weeks ahead of Walker. I know it's hard to wait - just envision Walker active again - that tail WILL WAG and those legs WILL MOVE. Just be patient and know that we all are pulling for you.

Thanks for the update. Been thinking about him and Poppy alot, and praying for good news. A little progress is better than no progress, so happy to hear the news.

Kaci I am glad to see walker is recovering. Still only 2weeks post incident. Have you asked your vet about physical therapy services for walker? Swimming after wounds heal? See you guys are in top of everything by already getting a doggie walker. Prayers and good thoughts for recovery your way. My holly went through something similar but in a less severe case. She still has limited sensation in her hind legs, jumping is a no,no and her muscles are atrophied on the other hand she also has acl issues which aggravate the situation. By the way be careful with any rough surfaces walker might drag himself as he can produce shear on his skin and it can create wounds.

Hi Kaci,

Good to hear of Walker's small accomplishments! One step at a time and slow! That is how, I believe, it should and will be.

Good that you are keeping him quite as well. I am sending my best wishes and my prayers for his continued "baby steps" recovery. Maybe some day we will be able to read that he has recovered enough that he will not need the cart that you so lovingly purchased for him. :love

Hi guys. We're still pluggin' along. Walker seems to be getting decent control over his bladder. He'll potty by himself (with me holding his rear up) for about 8 or 10 seconds, and then I usually have to help him finish. He has crazy reflexes now when we pinch his toes. I try to remind myself, they are just reflexes, he doesn't necessarily feel it. But I'm starting to feel a little bit (tiny amount) of resistance when I hold his rear up and he has feet on the ground. It's not much, but it's a start.

We've done the bathtub thing a few times now. He's not real thrilled with it, I think it scares him. There are no pictures because I actually get in the tub with him. I stay clothed, but it is impossible to get a picture of us in the tub, while I'm in the tub. Then changing my clothes, drying myself, drying a soaking wet cocker who can't shake excess water off, or really "air dry" :goof I do think it's great for his muscles/joints though, since it's non-weight baring.

We have also been putting him in his new wheels about every-other day. We leave him in there for about 5 minutes and then take him out, and bring him inside. He is wiped out afterwards and sleeps for quite a while. We're trying to make sure he doesn't over-do it while still challenging his muscles/joints/nerves. His rear muscles have really started to atrophy. He's a skinny-bottom boy now. :gig

I'm currently looking into supplements that might be good for muscles/joints/nerves. Any ideas or thoughts? He sees his regular vet for the first time this afternoon. He hasn't seen her since he hurt his back. He truly needs after-care now. His surgeon is an emergency surgeon, so he's not a true "vet" and can't provide the time or love his vet can. Walker needs his vet now, to see him, care for him, follow-up with him. I'm excited to see what she has to say.

Thanks for your continued thoughts and prayers. :hp

Hi,
This is one I use for Rosey and Solo http://k9power.com/k9-joint-strong.html ... RQodlWh8pw

There are several products with similar sounding names, but I have been happy with this one. It may look pricey, but a cocker-size dog only gets 1-2 teaspoon a day of the supplement so it lasts a long time. I buy it in the 7 lb. size and split the order with other people.

Glad to hear that things are a little better. Is it possible to get him assessed by a neurologist? There is physical therapy for dogs but I wouldn't do it without your vet's knowledge and approval so perhaps if you have him assessed for passive physical therapy you can have an idea of the exercises you can be doing to prevent the muscles from atrophying. At any rate....it's just an idea.

I second Vickie's thoughts - you need a neurologist and / or physio to tell you how to keep him healthy while he continues to heal.

BIG UPDATE!

We are bearing all of our weight!!!! You have to pick his butt up off the ground and get his legs situated, but he will hold his weight on his own for about 3-5 seconds!!!! I know that doesn't sound like much, but it's huge!!! After a few seconds he'll either sway to the side or his legs will give out. And we do it several times in a row. :joy

We're continuing some sort of physical therapy every day. We're trying to get him in the tub everyday doing "laps" where he walks from one end to the other while his butt floats. We also put him in his wheelchair about every other day. We took him for his first walk in the wheelchair yesterday. We only went about 3 houses down and back, but he loved it (vet approved all of the various activities too)! We're pretty excited, and so is he. He's definitely more himself now and is starting to adjust to various things.

Just wanted to share my excitement.

:hp :joy :hp :joy
