I've never groomed a dog before, and am still working on letting Rocky's coat come in before I figure out what I like best. He's an English Cocker and i think he is field coated, so its going to be a wait.

However I have a question. The hair on his *winky* grows super fast and its quite icky that he goes pee and then jumps all over my furniture, etc. I clean him witha wet wipe, but my groomer will clip that hair for me when I take him for his nails. Is this something that I can clip myself and if so, what kind of scissors should I use when clipping it? Are there good grooming scissors I can use?

I really wouldn't worry too much about what kind of scissors you use for this particular job. My puppy Oliver grew hair there pretty quickly too, and like Rocky, he would have drips of urine clinging to the hair when he was finished. One day, I decided enough was enough, and pulled a pair of scissors out of the cupboard and with one quick snip, the problem was solved.

If you are looking to get into grooming down the road, I suppose you may want to invest in a pair of shears that you can use for trimming him later...but for practical purposes, a pair of standard household scissors will do the trick just fine. Trust me, the next time Oliver went potty, I was kicking myself for failing to snip his hair earlier!

By your post it sounds like you plan on grooming him yourself, in the future? If so, I would invest in a pair of grooming clippers, like the Andis 2 speed, or maybe an Oyster brand. However if you don't plan on grooming him, I would just purchase a cheep grooming kit fron Petsmart, Petco, Walmart, any of those should have it, look for one that comes with a #10 blade that way you are less likely to nick a squirmy pooch. I would not use scissors, one major squirm and here is way to big a chance of bad things happening. I shave my own as well in this manner and in case you choose to do so here's how I do it. I have Indy who is an adult very submissive trusts me completely, and when he knows I want him to do something, he will do it, this may not work with a six month old pup, but perhaps after he is a little older, for now have someone hold him down. My method is I sit on the floor with my legs straight in front of me, slightly apart, just enough to support the dog and have Indy lay belly up, with his head resting on my feet, I then shave his, uh, belly, by going with the grain, i.e. up. I hope this helps! :th-up

I guess scissors could potentially pose a hazard...I just used my fingers as a guide, placing the blade next to my finger above his penis. If he would have squirmed, the scissors wouldn't have gone anywhere near his skin.

Clippers seem a bit intense if you're just snipping the hair from the tip of his penis, but Emma's right that a fully tummy shave would indeed necessitate something similar :-)

Adam, you're right, clippers are a bit intense for what Gina was asking about, I must have misread her post, I understood it to be she wanted to clip the hair off of his penis, not just the stuff that gets urine on it. Which is exactly what I do, although I usually shave a little of the surrounding area as well, since as of Jim's instructions, yeast infections can happen. Which is just gross But you are right, for just trimming excess fur, the part the gets really soaked, I would (and have) just use craft scissors. :happy

Debbie is right.
Proper term is ear/nose hair scissors. they are small and have a safety tip on them so they won't poke and also have the proper edge that cuts hair easily.
