I also am outraged at your vet for lying to you. A dr-patient relationship has to be based on trust, and lying to a patient is not what a trusting relationship is. Especially when you had this forum to be able to give you knowledgable advice had you first posted that Romeo had parvo instead of "gastro". I understand cultural differences between our countries, but our love for our furbabies is not. When I first read that I prayed and prayed because I know how dearly you love him, and I am so glad he is turning the corner on the way to recovery. I urge you to read the stickied posts under Caring for your Cocker, about AIHA/IMHA, IVDD, pancreatitis, etc so if Romeo gets ill again you will first recognize the symptoms. Knowledge is power, and with the internet at our fingertips we can learn so much more than we could before. The power of this forum is very strong, and all our prayers certainly helped lil Romeo. And do not feel guilty, you did not know the other dog was sick with parvo.

I'm so glad to hear that your pup is improving. I am sure you are more than relieved although still concerned. Please tell him we send our most heartfelt "woofs".

I do have two real issues though. First off - a vet that will not be honest with you is not appropriate. You will have to make some very major decisions about the care, treatment and such that your pup requires through what I hope will be a long and happy life. If you can't trust that this man/woman is being honest with you, how can you make those decisions? How can you ever be sure he/she is working in the best interest of your pup? My personal feeling is the vet is a poor practitioner and a careless one. And, before anyone takes exception to my personal feeling, that is based on my second issue. This "vet" knowingly allowed you to walk around with a pup that has a highly contagious disease. There is no telling how many dogs - some that may have been pups without shots as yet - were in contact with your dog or walking where he walked or "going" where he went. There is no way to alert those people so that they can monitor their pups and keep them safe now. I really find that unforgivable.

I just started following this thread and I happen to agree with Debbie! :dk :roll I am afraid that I don't understand either. Is Romeo considered "cured" and isn't he still very contagious???? :sad And, one would think that it would be prudent to keep him quiet and resting. Dunno???

All worries considered, I am glad that Romeo is making progress from this deadly disease. :hp

The vet said that it is good for romeo to have some fresh air...n i observed that he was really happy to be out..excited..
And as he didnot vomit the whole night...today we would be starting his meal..but a lighter one..

I sure hope you will be serving Romeo boiled chicken and rice (or something comparable). I have had five Cocker Spaniels and have had to use this method for very upset tummies many, many times. :hp

The vet has suggested his puppy food in lesser quantity many times a day...he was eating Royal canin starters soaked in water..
He said that we can give him rice but in lesser quantity..say a spoon at once..
Would that be fine?

I wouldn't do the puppy food. Boiled chicken (no fat, so no skin) and rice. And yes, the vet is right about a spoon at once. Every hour if Romeo doesn't throw it back up. The intestines are so sensitive after parvo. It would be like you having the worst stomach virus ever and as soon as your 'over' it eating a super spicy meal, but times that by ten.

Boiled chicken and rice, I think is the way to go. The forum suggested this to me when Rocky's tummy was upset and he LOVES it. I use chicken as a training tool and add some chicken and rice and veggies to his dinner periodically.

I am so sorry to read that your puppers is sick. It is awful how you have been treated and lied to by the vet. I should hope that the vet is not taking you to the bank on treatment when he with-held the correct diagnoses in the first place.

Please know that I say this with all due respect, but I think you should find a new vet as soon as possible. I just don't think you are getting the best care possible - though it may also be that he is the best available to you.

I also think you should pay particular attention to ANYTHING that Julie tells you on this forum. While I have never met her in person, I think she knows more about cockers than just about anyone else, having bred, whelped litters, shown, groomed, done obedience training, nursed sick pups back to health, worked as a vet technician, and who-knows-what-else. There are also others who have experience with parvo and have made it through to the other side. PLEASE take Romeo's treatment plan very, very slowly. Keep him away from other dogs. Disinfect your home and do not bring other animals into it at this time. Parvo is VERY serious and you could lose Romeo if you aren't careful.

My suggestion is to take a chicken breast and boil it. Take one small piece, shred it well and feed him that - about one teaspoon worth. If he keeps it down then maybe two hours later try another teaspoon of it. As you can see - the one chicken breast will last for a while. If after a couple od days of not vomiting you want to do more, add some very mushy white rice to the chicken. You don't want to overload that tiny tummy and intestinal system.

In the meantime you should be disinfecting everything. I know people that have made sure the area where the puppy pottied is dug up and the dirt removed because they are concerned about reinfection. Parvo is very contagious which is why I posted about having concerns about the vet you are using and how it was handled. I also still think you should look for a different vet because, as I posted earlier, I have concerns about the way your current one works.

When I went to the second one for opinion,he said the vet I consulted earlier is the most experienced vet in the town..and denied to take Romeo's case..
And yes I would surely give him the meal you all have suggested...I trust your words...

I would also not walk him around your yard. I'd keep him in one small area and disinfect that area well.

:TYou
For trusting in our words...
I even went as far as to try to look up local Veterinarians, in your area of India, and was lost in cyberspace. :goof Guess, you could find that interesting and funny. But, Romeo needs proper care. Unfortunately for Romeo, your Vet, did not tell you truth about his condition. This is not acceptable and would sound a real "alarm" here in the USA.

I am very happy that you are so willing to "trust" us to help you to determine the best care for your Romeo. There are many folks that have answered your post (very knowledgeable Cocker Spaniel owners) who have given you recommendations. Please trust us to talk/work you through this. :hp

You love Romeo, and we really do love him as well. :hp

Best wishes and my prayers for your baby Romeo,
Dawn

You are the only one who can decide what is best for Romeo, but please hear our calls as well!

Please note that I did not imply that the vet was inexperienced. My concerns are based in the fact that:

1. He hid the pup's actual diagnosis from you and
2. Because he hid the fact your dog could have infected other dogs unknowingly

As I stated earlier, how can you trust any decision you may have to make about your pup if you don't know if the vet is telling you the truth or what he thinks you should hear? To me that would not only send up red flags but a battery of fireworks as well. And to couple that with possibly allowing other animals to be exposed to parvo in an effort to keep you from being "worried" is very irresponsible.

I hope your pup is continuing to improve and able to keep the chicken down. Good luck with his recovery.
