On The morning of 9 march 2012. ...i noticed Romeo was not reacting on anything i did...even if i offered him food...he didnt take it..
Thought i was being manipulated...
But no,then he vomitted n jst few mins after that i saw his stools which were very loose n red in color...
I immediately rushed to the vet,checked his body temperature which was 104.6,he weighed 7.25 kgs,vet informed it was gastro...n started the medication...he asked us to stop his meals and even water for few days..
Today was the third day...n still his body temperature is 103,weight 6.25..n still thrice he went potty with the same red colored stools...n we r not even giving him water..he's jst on medication..
Any thoughts..?

I don't mean to scare you but if it were me I'd be back at that vet NOW. At very least I think he needs to be getting fluids. Please call the vet....

I had to sign on just to answer this one - I would be at the vet NOW (preferably a second vet, second opinion). I can't imagine there being a reason to withhold fluids for so long, without any negative side effects ...

I don't mean to scare you, but I wouldn't even call, I'd take my dog and GO ... NOW ...

I agree with the others... get Romeo to a vet immediately. I'd be very surprised if he isn't dangerously dehydrated after three days with no liquids and runny stool on top of that! You need to have him at the emergency clinic pronto! He's too young to go that long! Plus he's been feeling poorly for over a week now! Please keep us posted on how he's doing!

I agree I'd be back at the vet....a DIFFERENT vet. Why would he tell you to take away water from a dog with a temp? He's no doubt dehydrated by now....an added serious illness. You mentioned, I believe, a week or so ago Romeo was not feeling well or do I have you confused with another?

I don't understand withholding food either for a "few days"...ONE (24 hrs) maybe but not more than that. Most meds need food too or they are harsh on the tummy

Actually he's getting infused by the liquid medicines twice a day...n today is the third day..i took a second opinion also...they say he should start his recovery by tomorrow...
They have also taken his blood test...we'll get the reports by the evening..

Blood test report normal..
The vet said romeo would be fine within three days...his loose stools have almost stop...
But he has decided to infuse romeo for few more days...

infused by meds? I guess I've never heard of such a thing unless it's through an IV Is he still without food and water until he recovers in 3 days?

I would so find a new vet...nothing he is saying makes much sense to me, but who am I..

N i even considered the second opinion debbie..n he also insisted on Romeo being without food n water for three more days..

I'm not a vet. But I would seriously question any vet that made a dog go SIX DAYS without any water, let alone three!

Now I know we are all yelling about hydrating your dog - but what we haven't asked is: what is the IV meds Romeo is getting? How much? How often? Is it IV into the bloodstream, or is it "subQ" - subcutaneous under the skin?

Guys it sounds like Romeo may have parvo. The symptoms are classic. In that case, yes it is necessary to withhold anything by mouth until the vomiting stops.It sounds as if he is getting SQ fluids (under the skin)from the vet.

After reading this u crosschecked with google...u r true the symptoms are the same...n vet has asked us to keep romeo away from other dogs until he recovers...bt then why dint he tell us about it...he jst said...it was gastro...

Are you taking Romeo to the vet yourself and how often? Are you giving him the meds yourself? Is Romeo at home? How do you administer the meds?

Yes romeo is at home..and we take him twice a day to vet...n we,that is my husband n me,take him to the vet.

Good. I was wondering if you were getting all this from the doctors mouth or second hand. I will keep Romeo in my thoughts for a quick and full recovery. It must hurt you terribly to see him so sick.

Been following this from the beginning and feel I have to also give some words of advice. Please,please take this little guy to another vet. Can you even imagine how thirsty this baby is? As a nurse, I certainly can understand the importance of resting the stomach, but in the meanwhile, it is imperative to hydrate the dog by some other means....Intravenous or clysis,etc. You haven't mentioned if he is peeing, or how often. If he has stopped, you could be heading for kidney failure from the severe dehydration, and you could lose him from that. Has the vet done stool cultures in order to see if there is a specific strain of bacteria in the stool that is causing this? I am so afraid for this pup, and I see how much you love and care for him, please get just one more opinion! Prayers from me and my Rosie.

Has Romeo had all of his shots? If not, I do wonder why he wasn't tested for parvo. Parvo can cause the gastro illness you mention

Romeo had his 4 shots completed by the month of January.
And today because of all of you,I questioned the vet about Parvo..
He said he already knew it was PARVO but he didn't want us to be scared so he hid it from us.
Romeo pees around four times a day..which according to the vet is fine..
and now is in the recovery phase.
and today he even started drinking water...but again after 2 hours he vomited a green colored liquid.
I feel I should commit that it is all my mistake as a few days before I brought a Labrador pup home just to socialize romeo...fed him in romeo's bowl...I never knew he was suffering from this Parvo disease...his breeder not even cared to tell me...
yesterday when i saw the same pup in the hospital....i broke ...and then asked the Vet and came to know about all this...
m so upset that because of me my boy has suffered so much..
I pray to god that no dog in the world ever gets this.

I know it's hard to watch our pups be sick - for ANY reason - it sounds like your pup IS getting H2) (from the 2x day visits - I am guessing it is SubQ fluids and meds the dr is administering) and I applaude you for doing that, making the time for such a committment to your darling baby Romeo.

I am still ready to slap your vet tho for not being forthcoming and "hiding" the true diagnosis from you. Hang in there - you are on top of his care and you have the power of the forum rooting for Romeo and your family!

The vet is giving him fluids twice a day from what I'm reading. Again, with parvo, it's imperative that nothing goes in the mouth. This disease tears up the GI tract like nothing else.

Sarah when Romeo is feeling better, it will be important to feed him very bland food in very small amounts throughout the day. Like a tablespoon at a time, ten times a day. Something like boiled chicken breast(no skin) and rice. If the vet has prescription diets, Hills I/D is what you would want in canned form.

Parvo is indeed a nasty disease and Romeo is probably recovering so well, because he had some shots. however, based on his age in your signature, there is no way he should have finished his puppy series by the end of January. Usually they wrap up around four months, not two months.

What a nightmare! I hope that Romeo is on the road to recovery. I personally feel the vet was wrong not telling you that your dog has a Highly contagious disease! Has he indicated what you need to do to cleanse Romeo's environment? I know that Parvo is very difficult to get rid of. I would NOT bring any unprotected dog's or puppies into my yard or house.

Julie... Romeo's birth date is Oct. 12, 2011... I had to look twice to figure that out.

I had to check this thread first thing. I soooo hope Romeo is better and continues to get better.

What you do know now is that Romeo was NOT through his series of shots and after he makes a full recovery you need to finish up. After that he should be fully protected.

Friends..i again confirmed with the vet..he said..Romeo had his last shot on january 26,which means his fourth shot...m really confused...
N about the hygiene..we have decided to change everything possible around him...and would clean his crate personally using a good antiseptic... ..
N today his body temperature is normal... N he's tryin to sit, walk and gives looks at times... Thats a relief for us...
