:hi All,

It takes a long time to plan the American Spaniel Club Cocker National Show and the planning for Reno 2013 has started. Location: Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, NV.

UPDATE -- July 10 - 14, 2013 are the dates. The schedule is going back to the old format: move-in day is Wednesday. Competition is Thursday - Sunday (which is July 11-14).

For anyone who has wanted to come to a cocker national (and meet all of the wild ‘n crazy Zim people, in a CASINO, no less :happy), this is a great one to attend because you can bring your family and your cockers. Rates, including the special “resort” fee are approximately $99.00 (room) and $120.00 (suite). NO ADDITIONAL PET FEE! Check out the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino’s web site to see all the things that are available for family members who aren’t interested in watching a dog show: http://www.grandsierraresort.com.

Watching (and competing!!!!) has never been more convenient. Performance and conformation events are held in the same in-door/air conditioned area. No going from one building to another: no competing outside in the July heat. The schedule for the specific events on each day will be decided in the summer of 2012.

NEWBIES -- PLEASE CONSIDER ENTERING BEGINNER NOVICE AND/OR RALLY NOVICE. The performance ring will be enclosed with some type of fencing (as obedience/rally chair I can guarantee the ring will be enclosed). Rally novice is all on leash. Beginner novice obedience is almost all on leash. Start training now. Get a couple of qualifying scores at other AKC obedience/rally shows and come to Cocker National 2013 to finish your title :nw . There will be kick-a** new title ribbons (I can guarantee the ribbons will be great. I’m picking them :wnk ).

If you aren’t interested in competitive events, stay tune for seminars/clinics of interest to any cocker owner. We are planning new ways to educate and entertain the attendees of Cocker National 2013.

So if I don’t see you in St. Louis for Cocker National 2012, I hope to see you in Reno in 2013 (and award you & your cocker a new title ribbon for obedience and/or rally :YAY ).

Colleen Keough
Obedience/rally chair for Cocker National 2013

Colleen,
I plan to go with all three of mine as it is only one day drive from here. When do they start with the reservation for that far out?

Cherry will be in Open by then and maybe going for an RAE. We will make Louie do Beginner Novice out of his retirement and I might make hubby show him just for the fun of it. I don't know where Heidi will be at that point.

Hey, maybe we will try to line up the showing so that we will try to go for titles at the National. It is always more fun getting the pretty ribbons.

I'll check with Stephanie Kaul about when we can start making reservations. In the past it was about 12 months out.
Very soon, I'll start looking for ribbons. I'm not looking for exceptionally long ribbons because they cost a fortune to have mounted and framed! But there are many interesting designs for rosettes that are worthy of being presented a breed's national specialty. (Plus, the cost to entry at a national specialty is higher than a regular show).

I'm looking forward to that show. Plus, after last year, when I hear A/C that is music to my ears! :wnk

Maybe we'll get adventurous and go back to training in obedience and maybe rally!

Sounds great! The location of the Grand Sierra Resort is very easy to find; close to the Reno/Tahoe Airport and also right on #395. They have wonderful restaurants, a huge parking lot, and it's just a very nice place. My famiy has lived in Reno since the mid 1800's so Reno is a special place for me. I'll let my son and daughter-in-law know that I'll be staying with them for those days. :cool

In addition to the dog show, etc., there is beautiful Lake Tahoe if one has an extra day or two to spend in the area. Virginia City is also a special place to visit.

Thanks Colleen for all the information and as the time gets closer, I'll have to figure out the schedule so as not to miss any of the special events.

:hi Colleen,

Sounds like a lot of fun. For those who are interested on attending, in your RV, I just called and they do have a RV resort. I Google'd the site and it is located next to the Truckee River, with young trees in each site. I left a message for them to call me with the rates. I will post the info at a later time.

:luvACS

Dawn :paw

I have entered the rates for the Grand Sierra Casino RV Resort to a subsequent post this thread:

I'm hoping to bring Gracie for some obedience and rally . . . depending on what I'm doing with Stephanie that year. Will there only be two days of trials Colleen? Three days would be a lot more convenient for those of us that don't get down to the US much :tg

There is only two days of obedience/rally at the Cocker Nationals. I understand that 3 days would be good for people coming from Canada so they have a mathematical chance of finishing a US title in one trip. But there have only been 2 days of obedience/rally at any of the Cocker Nationals I have attended. Sometimes we have more days of agility, but not obed/rally.

Don't know how these things work, as I've never been to anything before.
But am very excited it's coming here to Reno. Do you need volunteers for anything? I would love to help.

Do we need volunteers :ROFL :ROFL :ROFL :ROFL . YES. YES. AND YES!!!
There are tasks that need to be done before the show (fundraising), tasks during the show (ring crew tasks), etc.

When we get closer to the event, I'll be asking for helpers.

I am all in. Sam has started a rally class. I can't wait for 2013

Seeing as how I have never been to one.... What does the dog need? UTD shots I know. Papers, etc? Not sure how this works.

Dogs need to have one of the types of AKC registration. For dogs that do not have AKC papers (rescues are the most common), AKC offers the ILP (indefinite listing program) or PAL (purebred alternative listing). With ILP and PAL registrations you can show in the performance events. Here is the link for more information: http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm

Can't wait to see you in Reno!

And if you enter them in the WCCSC Specialty in May as a warm-up, you could be going for a title in Reno in July.

Here's my take on the RV park.
We recently spent a week in Reno at the Grand Sierra RV park. It is an ok park, definitely nothing fancy. It is a large park, but the spaces are all dirt and sand, no grass and no trees, so it is pretty dusty and warm. There are hook-ups for water, electric and sewer, but no tv cable.
We asked to be close to the fenced dog park area. There were 2 fenced areas adjacent to each other, again these were all dirt and sand, no grass. No doggy bags provided in the dog area, but we always bring our own, so no problem there. However, we often found big poop piles left in the area, possibly by the permanent park residents' dogs, so we cleaned up after more than our own pups. The fence also needed some repairs, nothing major, but was really ugly. I checked for safety, and there was no place my pups could escape
Our 4 dogs ran around and played and got real dusty there, but had a great time.
I did complain to the park management that they needed to make some improvements to the RV park and the dog area, and would be nice if they were made before summer 2013. They responded that they did have plans for some upgrades, but cable TV isn't one of the upgrades.
I would rank the park as a 5-6 out of 10. Would we stay there again, yes.
We tried to make reservations for the ASC Nationals before we left the park, but they are not taking reservations for summer till Jan 2013.
