Question...for those of you that crate trained your puppers when they were young, how did you handle the complete onset of neuorses and spastic craziness that occured when you let them out of their crate? When I let Rocky out of his crate in teh afternoon when I come home to walk him at lunch, or when I get home 3 hours later for the day and let him back out to get my son off teh school bus.. he goes positively planetary. He runs around, he jumps and jumps and jumps, jumps and falls on hsi back, jumps on all 4's, he goes bonkers. I tried training him to sit on my inside steps so i can put a leash on him before we go out, but then he started trying to jump on my, or he would jump on my shoulders and catpault himself off my back.

He's 5 months old, and if I didn't know any better I would say he's part cocker, part jack russell, and part ADD.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like pent-up puppy energy and is perfectly normal after being in a crate. I would just let him get it all out running around the back yard if you can until he settles down. He should settle down a little bit once he's neutered and gets a little older - but his energy sounds typical for his age.

My advice is to step back and enjoy the puppy zoomies. They don't last forever and you will miss this expression of shear puppy joy and exhuberance once it's gone :love

It is quite lovely to see him so excited and it really makes me want to come home and see him. I just worry he is going to hurt himself with all the jumping and landing on his back and legs. I don't want him to tear an ACL or anything.

I agree - let him do some zoomies - but let him run some off and DEFINITELY make him sit before the leash goes on! If my kids aren't settling for the leash, I "click!" it to help them focus - they know that means I'm tired of waiting - :gig

Romeo used to do the same...so immediately after returning from office...i take him to the backyard...he does his job..n thn offer him some water...once he calms down...i start his training...
one thing u must remember is...when u free him from the crate..u shouldn't touch him..niether talk to him nor make an eye contact...this will help rocky understand that this is a routine..nothing to get so excited about..
u can handle a puppy who jumps upon u. ..bt believe me handling an adult dog of few pounds wouldnt be so easy..
Romeo has shown some improvement by this. ...hope it would help u as well....love to rocky...
