Will it take for my pup to grow out his fur? I kept him in a short puppy cut this summer but for the winter I want to do the modified (short back and fuzzy legs). He hasn't been to the groomer in 2 months but his fur isn't very long either, it is just now starting to look shaggy. Also how long does it take for the ear hair to grow? Champ's is still short like the day we brought him home.

Hi, :hi

It is difficult to say how long. Depends on the type of coat etc.

I would say a year and a half for full coat... but that is just an rough idea.

Good luck

It varies to much dog to dog. My Hannah cannot go more than 4 weeks without being groomed. The hair on her nose grows so fast you cannot see her eyes, however, Tucker can go nearly 6 weeks before "getting beautiful" as we call it.

I have a similiar question, but can't post it ... Coco's hair has gotten really matted on her legs and backend and then I matted it on her ears. When I bathed her last I put her ear between my hands and rubbed them real good - I checked to see if it tangled the hair and it didn't, so I kept doing it and when I went to comb her out, her ears were matted. I've tried to comb out some of the mats, cut out others and still have knots of hair. I'm thinking about just clipping her legs and backend and just starting over, but when she's wet she looks so long and thin, but when I blew her out she looked all fluffy and full of hair. So I was wondering how long it would take for her legs and feathers to grow back out. Should I just take her to a groomer or get the clippers?

thanks

Do you use a good conditioner? That might help a bit.

I can't answer about the time it takes to grow the coat out, as it varies like everyone said.
Mamie, when Reesie getts matted we use a wide tooth comb (doggie version... but any would do) and slowly, gently work at unmatting the fur. Work from the outside of the matt and a little at a time work your way in. Be very patient, you don't want to pull or be rough on the skin.
for the next bath, don't use the palms of your hands to scrub the fur. Go in one direction with your fingers. work the shampoo from the top of the head to the bottms of the ears.
Also be sure to brush your pup out well before the bath. wetting the hair makes the matts tighten making them harder to remove.

Good luck and welcome to the forum :hi

I used a spray on conditioner but on her ears and head I used an olive oil treatment and let it stay in for several hours and her ears are so silky. One ear has a few gaps in it where I had to cut out the mats, but the other one looks fine.

LOL, I learned that the hardway! what I wound up doing was shaving her legs - now my cocker looks like a brittney. She's got a punk hairdo and skinny little legs. Without all that hair she looks naked. The hair on her legs was kinda mushy - that's the only word I can think of to describe it, s I'm hoping when it grows back out it will look better.

It's a whole lot easier to keep it brushed out than it is to get the mats out for sure and that little rubber brush worked fine until it broke. I need to go to the feed store and get another one. I bought a little table and chair that fold up at walmart yesterday to groom her on, I might have to go back and get the stool though. She's pretty good about letting you groom her, she likes to primp and be pampered. She'll run to the washing machine and jump up for me to put her up there.

I clipped her on Thanksgiving, so I can easily remember that. I hope her hair grows back fast.
