So im not a very patient person, but I have to be when I choose my next Cocker, for I have been really wanting a Sable. I dont see these as often as other colorations. I actually work with a Cocker spaniel breeder (although she is not who I got my Lucy from) and I asked her about Sable cockers, she said one of her females will produce usually one pup in that color, but she said they are not very popular and are usually the last ones to be picked from her litters. I was shocked to hear that, I think they are absolutely stunning! So when I came across a litter of cocker pups yesterday with a couple sable boys I fell in love with one of them immediately, but knew since I was going on vacation next month that it was just not good timing. But I ended up putting his little picture on FB because I wanted him so badly. One of my FB friends comes on and says, "Sorry, but that dog is fugly" ..my jaw dropped and I really wanted to say something SO rude back to her, but I didnt. I just said that I thought he was gorgeous, even though I really wanted to say "Well he is way cuter than your bichon mix!" :evil I have seen a couple sables on this forum, I think all colorations are beautiful, but I have my heart set on a Sable for my next cocker.

I have two sables and my next will be a sable also. I love them think they are really special as they change so much and you never know what you're going to get. Plus I like that they're kind of unusual, and not seen as often. Kaitlyn is a solid black sable and has a coat of many colors and Karlie is a chocolate sable parti. My computer crashed and I don't have a better picture of Karlie at this time but she beautiful too!!

SABLES ARE NOT "POPULAR" BECAUSE OF POLITICS! PLAIN AND SIMPLE. I THINK THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL, THEY ARE ABLE TO COMPETE IN JUST ABOUT EVERY COUNTRY EXCEPT THE U.S. I HAVE ONE AND HE IS THE JOY OF OUR LIVES, GREAT PERSONALITY PLUS HE IS A LITTLE SWEETHEART! EVERYONE LOVES HIM WHEN THEY MEET HIM. I THINK THEY ARE A STEP ABOVE WHEN IT COMES TO COCKERS, THEIR UNIQUE COLORING MAKES THEM A HIT WHEN YOU GO FOR A WALK OR TO THE DOG PARK! :love

Don't waste time and energy over her comments. Rise above her drivel. You can like any color you want! Sable it is!

Never really thought that was a possibility. I saw them first 2 weeks ago, they are probably already spoken for, I did leave her an email though.

Tom I have to disagree with you on the politics. The show community is a very small population of cocker owners, and most of us think sables are beautiful even if they aren't allowed to show in the U.S. <--THAT is because of old guard American Spaniel Club members only. An even smaller population. My guess as to why this breeders sable puppies are the last to sell is people simply aren't familiar with the color and probably think they aren't 'real' cockers. Heck I still get that with my particolors.

Julie:

Saw one of the ASC's "executives" on a plane coming back from Oklahoma City a few years ago. Three of us, including Sheila Vessar, who owns my Bella's Scarlett, were sitting together. We were all waiting to deplane and change planes.

This "executive" asked us if we'd gone to the show, since we were looking at the programs, etc. We said yes. She asked me if I had a Cocker and I said yes, a Black Sable one. She looked like I'd just handed her a skunk and said, "Oh!". I told her that I was proud to have a Sable, loved her and would put her against any other dog any time.

Sheila almost piped up, "Yes, and I have her daughter!"... :evil

Needless to say, the lady beat a hasty retreat off the plane.

I actually sent an e-mail to the President of the ASC complaining about this woman, since she said she was an executive and blabbed her name...of course, no response from Mr. President-at-the-time.

What the heck can we do to change this? The "blue hairs" can't be in the majority! :bang

Of all people to meet on a plane to criticize/disdain sables....Sheila and Sally. :roll

I wouldn't want to disagree with either one on much of anything, especially their beloved and gorgeous sable Cocker Spaniels. :OMY I know these two ladies very well. :hp

You know people are entitled to their opinions but that was really rude of her to say that. I would most certainly have said something back to her.

I totally agree; when they are naughty they are very naughty, would not trade my chocolate sable for any other color in the world!! Just be aware there are many variations of solid sables like Sally's and sable partis like Tom's. Sasha is a chocolate sable and Sally's is a black sable. I was told by a breeder what differentiates them is the color of heir nose (chocolates will have a brown nose, blacks will have a black nose). I think sables are harder to photograph, they can look a certain shade in outdoor lighting and a totally different color indoors.

I'm sure that one day sables will be considered a normal color - may just take a while. A sable parti is actually my favorite color of cocker.

I did want to let you know that sables really change color; they do not necessarily look the same as when they were little. Here are a couple of pictures of Sasha when she was about 4 weeks old. The pictures above were taken last fall when she was about 2 years old.

I love sables, and would most of all love to have a sable & white next time. But hubby is one of those that is less keen on the colour, though he's not against sables as such, he just loves buffs to the exclusion of ANY other colour! :tg
