REESE has done wonderfully well since having her right eye removed (Enucleation) on January 18, 2012. It became necessary to remove the eye because of very high pressures due to Glaucoma. The morning of surgery, Reese's eye reached pressures of 91 and 90; very painful for Reese. Since Reese's right eye had been blind for three years, due to a detached retina, she didn't have to make the adjustment to having only one sighted eye. We are very pleased with the beautiful job Dr. Schmidt (Veterinary Ophthalmologist) did in making Reese's surgical site look as natural as possible. A silicone prosthesis was put in the eye socket so it wouldn't "sink in." Her eyelids were sewn shut. The fur has grown over her eyelids and the fact that she only has one eye is not readily noticeable.

Reese's removed eye was sent to pathology and the report told us many things that we already knew in addition to the fact that her channels are very narrow. That being the case, Dr. Schmidt is taking aggressive action in protecting Reese's good left eye from Glaucoma. Reese's daily med schedule is as follows: A.M. - Levothyroxine, Methazolamide (tabs); Timolol, Nevanac, Tacrolimus (drops); 3 P.M. - Tacrolimus (drops); P.M. - Methazolamide (tabs), Timolol, Nevanac (drops), Levothyroxine (tabs); BEDTIME - Tacrolimus (ointment). Reese has a daily chart and all meds are charted so we don't get mixed up! None of this is a problem at all.

Reese is a very happy girl and we're so grateful to Dr. Schmidt for her excellent care and making sure Reese has excellent sight. :hp

They are beautiful! I love the "skirts", I have to keep my cockers with short hair, even with a fenced yard they pick up pine needles and other debris...but I do appreciate the look and amount of grooming that must go into keeping them looking like Reese MC!

Glad to hear she's doing well. She's as beautiful as ever.

Those meds sound all too familiar to me ... my Elmo had a prosthetic eye placed a couple of weeks ago and we're treating the right to keep the pressure under control.

Oh, she looks as beautiful as ever, Gail! I've always thought Reese was such a pretty little cocker (and to see her with her friend Morgan is just precious). I'm glad to hear she is doing well and feeling better without the bad eye. You're right - you cannot even tell she's had an eye removed. Continued best wishes for her left eye. She's in excellent hands.

Ok- this is a human vs cocker question. My sister in law has glaucoma, and recently had a drain inserted into her eye to keep the fluid pressure normal. You can't see it, she says it's in the top of her eye somewhere. But the good news is it has resolved her glaucoma. I just wonder if this procedure is also available for dogs?

Hi Darra,

That's great news that your sister-in-law's Glaucoma problems have been resolved by this procedure with the drain. There are different types of Glaucoma - Open Angle, Closed Angle, Normal-Tension, Congenital, and more. Our Veterinarian Ophthalmologist has never mentioned this procedure with the drain for Reese. Reese has Closed Angle Glaucoma and also has very narrow chanels. I'm also thinking that the delicate placement of a tiny drain in a canine would be questionable because rough playing and blunt force trauma would most likely not only cause damage to the drain, rendering it ineffective, but perhaps cause further damage to the eye - corneal ulcers, detached retina, etc. Anyhow, the next time we see Dr. Schmidt, I'll ask her if this procedure is available for dogs. It's an interesting question, Darra, and I'll report back when we see Dr. Schmidt in about a month.

:hi Thanks for all the wonderful comments about my Reese and Morgan, too. Reese is such a joy and I don't know what I would do without her. Today Reese went to the park which she absolutely loves to do. She doesn't walk at the park, she runs! She gets so excited when she sees her "park pals."

JoAnne, I gave Reese the kiss from you and Al and Brewster and Bonnie! Would love to see you. Wish we were having a Pupapalooza so we could see all our wonderful forum friends. You are all the best!

Dawn, thanks for urging me to "report" on Reese. It's always so much fun to hear from our great forum family.

I really appreciate everyone on the forum and all the great contributions they make to help us enjoy and keep our Cockers in good health. The NCR section is a lot of fun, too.

With love,
Gail and Reese :paw :hp :paw

Haven't been on the forum much lately. I just read about Reese's eye removal. So sorry that she had to go through that procedure. Snoopy says that Reese will still be his Valentine forever no matter what! :love He sends his best wishes to her. She does look wonderful and I know she must be feeling better not having to deal with the eye pressure.

Reese was always one of my favorite Zim girls. And Molly's half sister is a fave too. So glad they get to see each other and hang out. Very special indeed.
