:hi

Well, my little Chloie Pearl is itchy. :roll Her tummy is inflamed from her licking the area. I believe that she has environmental allergies and I guess the count is high around my home. Lately, I have noticed an increase in Chloie's itches. We have been treating her with TriTop Ointment and Hydroxyz HCL 25 mg. twice a day.

So, I was looking to purchase a couple of tubes of the TriTop Ointment, but noticed this Tea Tree Oil. The product has 4 stars and, depending on what you all say, I might be ordering some.

I just called my Vet and I am awaiting their reply. But, I would appreciate any "first hand" knowledge too.

Thanks,
Dawn :paw

I looked at the Wikipedia article and under safety got this quote: "According to the American Cancer Society: "Tea tree oil is toxic when swallowed. It has been reported to cause drowsiness, confusion, hallucinations, coma, unsteadiness, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, blood cell abnormalities, and severe rashes. It should be kept away from pets and children." I would check into it further before usingit where my dog could lick it off.

Rugby's vet recommended that I give him Claritin (he had diarrhea with Benadryl). It's working well.

I have been taking Ginger to a Dermatologist. I was using a shampoo with Tea Tree Oil and also a Tea Tree oil spray for outbreaks. She advised me that the Tea Tree Oil was not good for dogs that had itchy skin and were prone to yeast.

She also advised me to not use oatmeal shampoo for yeast prone dogs.

Thanks gals!

I have decided against trying this particular Tea Tree Oil product. Even though my Vet said that it "might" work. I then told his technician to tell him about what I have learned here and see what he has to say.

Thanks again, :nw
Dawn :paw

I am so grateful for your comments. I was about to order this product. :roll

My vet says you can give a 20-25 pound cocker 5mgs of Zyrtec. It comes in a 10 mg tablet so you need to cut it in half. It lasts 24hrs so you give it only once a day and it's non-drowsy. I used it with one of my fosters who licked his paws non-stop and it helped a lot.

Dawn... I think you made a good choice not to use the Tea Tree Oil. I tried it with my Bailey who has several allergies and found it did NOTHING to help her. I didn't really care for the smell either.

I am going to try the Zyrtec for Bailey... I think her body is too use to the Benedryl. I have Zyrtec the doc gave me....just have to check the mg's...

Zyrtec is fine, but do NOT give a dog Zyrtec D or anything with D without consulting your vet.

I suspect that this is like many things, a matter of degree.
I would never use it at 100% strength on a dog, or human, either.
I do have a spray of 5% that I've used very successfully with my vet's blessing for many years for all manner of skin owies.

I give Zoey a whole Zyrtec(generic) when itchies set in. Dogs dont process benadryl and Zyrtec like people. I never noticed any help from benadryl either!

Did she advise you what you could use?? I've always used teatree shampoo for dogs with sensitive skin and had no trouble. I bathed all mine in it last week because they are all itching at something, and all I know is that its 99% certain not to be fleas, they are Frontlined and I have searched their fur, and the amount they are itching I would be spotting at least one flea on one dog out of the lot. But the teatree shampoo hasn't done much good, maybe a little bit but not much. We haven't changed anything in our environment, so if it doesn't improve soon I'll have to get the vet to do a skin scrape or something in case it's mites! :sad

I love using Tea Tree Oil for various reasons around the home - however on a dog it HAS to be diluted and it should *never* be used in any strength on cats, fyi.

Max was using the Earthbath tea tree oil shampoo for awhile but he would end up licking himself raw on his groin after I used it so we went back to EpiSoothe and he does so much better on it. I do use a diluted solution as an anti-bac for little scrapes but it's about a 5% dilution in my first aid kit. I don't have a huge overall opinion on it, just a few experiences. FWIW, we give benedryl with good results. We actually had more problems with Zyrtec so we went back.

We use Hexadene is made by Virbac. It has Chlorhexidine in it and is a medicated shampoo.

Thanks, I'll investigate that.
