Post subject: Anyone with a cocker who 'used' to be field coated?
PostPosted: Tue Feb 28, 2012 6:53 pm
I'm looking for the drastic differences in their coats before and after spaying or neutering. I used to have a bunch saved, but recently deleted a whole bunch of pictures and must have accidentally taken those with them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Julie,
I can help with this. Rosey's coat is DRAMATICALLY different before and after the spay.

Before:

Rosey was about 16 months in that picture and she was spayed within 30 days of that photo.

She looks very like my pictures of George before and after - I've sent them to Julie, but here they are again.

Interesting! Maya wasn't spayed until she was four, her coat didn't change at all afterwards. She always had a very thick full coat though.

Angel was spayed at four months just before we got her. I thought she was going to be more field coated as hers was very thin but as she grew up it really filled out and got thicker, not quite as thick as Maya's though.

Penny's coat is completely different. Here are two photos from a similar perspective.

File comment: This is her coat from a similar view- it's extremely curly and it now mats easily. She also has a very curly topknot

Lottie's puppies who were spayed/neutered look like Penny does now with the large woolly coat. Next time I get a chance, I'll try to take a pic of my Ada who has not been spayed with her sister from the same litter who was spayed and post here. Big difference!

That is one glaring example of a coat change alright.

Thanks to everyone for sharing. It helped me make a point in a discussion about cocker coats on a grooming board.

So, Cocker coats get thicker after a spay/neuter?

Some (if not most) do, the coat structure changes as well from silky to wooly in a lot of cases.

Yes. I found this out with my rescue Cocker, Casper. His coat has changed a lot from what it was like before he was neutered. I was very surprised, too! :lol3 Oh well! I'll just have to deal with it even though it means I am going to have to learn how to groom him myself in order to save on all the groomer's fees! :wnk Therefore, I just ordered Jim's Cocker Spaniel grooming DVD. I am going to order a groomer's table as well as clippers. I am currently checking out the recommendations here and I will make a decision soon. I wound up shelling out nearly $100.00 in groomer's fees yesterday! YIKES!

If you still need more pictures I can scan some old pics of Mocha. Not only did her coat change after her spay (she was 2), she lost her tan markings on her face and legs. By the time she was 3 nobody would have guessed she was black and tan except for the tan under her tail! Hannah also lost most of the tan markings on her legs after her spay, and her markings are not as obvious on her face, but are still there.

I is on my agenda to get Royal neutered soon. After reading this I may change my mind. The last thing he needs is more coat. LOL!

I wouldn't worry when starting out with a cocker with a good full coat. Neither of my girls changed and had very full coats to start with...especially Abby.

I agree with this, 6 months after Mabel's spay and her coat is exactly the same. She was full coated before the spay.

Wow, that's really high! V.I.P. pet resort in Port Orange only charges $32.00 Ask for Carrie to do the groom- she does a nice cocker cut.
