I brought Gromit in to the specialty vet this morning for the surgery to repair the acl in her back leg. The intern took her back to be examined, and then I met with the surgeon. The first thing that she said to me was, "I don't know what you're using in Gromit's ears, but they are the cleanest, healthiest ears I have EVER seen! All dogs' ears should look like that!"

So, this post is a shout-out to Jim Zim to thank him for the ear cleaning recipe that he posted on this forum. It has kept Gromit's ears clean and healthy for over 8 years now!

That’s wonderful! I’ve been having pretty good success rotating Zymox and another cleaner from the vet. But every now and then they still get infections. It’s a struggle. May have to try Jim’s recipe after all. The only thing that kept me from doing so is I recall there is a staining ingredient. DH usually holds the dog against his chest while we clean its ears. I don’t know if he’d be as willing if the formula may stain his shirt or the patio furniture where they go out and shake their head.

How often do you clean his ears? Any tips?

The formula looks like it would stain, as it’s the color of weak ice tea. But honestly, that’s never been a problem and I have off-white wall-to-wall carpeting throughout my house. Since I’ve never had a problem with her ears, I only clean them every few weeks. But I also give her a squirt in each ear after a bath or if she’s been swimming, just for insurance!

Thanks for the quick response!! That’s great to know you haven’t had any staining issues. We just cleaned all four cockers’ ears tonight and sure enough Ruger has an infection in one of his. Poor baby just can’t catch a break with his ears. Once I finish treatment, I’m going to give Jim’s formula a try to see if it reduces his recurring infections. Thanks again!!
