Day Two, Friday July 21, 2017, American Spaniel Club Cocker Spaniel National Specialty

Today we move over to the obedience ring. It is Cocker-Only Day for Obedience and Rally. I’m only entered in novice obedience; no rally competition for me because I have the novice rally title and Mom hasn’t trained me for the advanced-level exercises.

But first a Flashback to 2016. I was in Beginner Novice Obedience and Rally Novice each day, and… well.., I sort of “kicked a**” last year; including winning High Scoring CH of Record in Obedience on Sunday. I was filling in some big paw prints because Solo earned this award in 2008.

We approached 2017 obedience competition with no expectations of repeating as HS CH of Record because we are in novice obedience and I’m not that good at those exercises. The goal is for me to finish my novice obedience title. I have 2 of the 3 required qualifying scores. I'm entered in obedience Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. But will I really have to do it all those days?????

Day 2 (continued)

Friday morning I really wanted to sleep in -- so I hid alongside the bed next to the wall. Mom doesn’t see well and I’m a black dog hiding in a dark space so I was able to hide for a while :evil . When Mom finally found me she told Dad that this attitude didn’t bode well for today’s competition. Then she told me “If you qualify today I won’t make you do obedience the rest of the weekend.” “Deal!” :th-up I thought.

As you can tell from the video this wasn't a very impressive exhibition of heeling, and I took a long 2.5 seconds pause before I responded in the recall, but it was good enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHUKGIK6t8M
Not on the video are the "group sits and downs". This is where dogs have to sit for 1 minute and stay in a down for 3 minutes. Handlers stay in the ring at the novice level. There is no video of the sits/downs because that is like watching paint dry.

It was very exciting when the judge called "Exercise Finished" and I was still in the down position. Mom kissed me. Dad, Juanita and Sally cheered from the sidelines. I didn't score high enough for a placement, but that didn't matter. For the second time in two days, my official AKC name changed. I was now
CH CT Samamari N April’s The Dark Knight CD NAJ BN RN TDU CGC

CH = Conformation champion; CT = Champion in Tracking; CD = Companion Dog for Novice Obedience NAJ = Novice Agility Jumpers with Weaves; BN = Beginner Novice Obedience; RN = Rally Novice; TDU = Tracking Dog Urban; and CGC = Canine Good Citizen.

And I didn't have to do obedience again for the rest of the weekend!

Day 3 of the ASC Cocker National Specialty (Saturday)

Today has two big events for me. First, I will participate in the Parade of Titleholders. This event is for dogs over 2 years of age that have earned AKC titles. It is an exhibition event, no competition, and each dog receives a big rosette with its name on it and the ring announcer reads a statement about the dog and its accomplishments. Dogs and handlers are encouraged to have props representing the titles earned. In my case, I get to wear my red tracking suit! And I will get to sniff my way all around the ring because that is what tracking dogs do! People laughed and clapped me. I guess I do look a little strange wearing my tracking suit in an inside ring.

https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=ow10069j5P4
CH CT SAMAMARI N APRIL’S THE DARK KNIGHT BN CD NAJ RN TDU CGC Gotham earned AKC championships in conformation and tracking before turning two. He loved tracking from the first smell, becoming the youngest champion in breed history and setting an AKC all-breed record by earning all five titles in just nine months and one day. With additional titles in agility, obedience, and rally, he already has earned ASC’s Versatility Award and will enter the Tracking Hall of Distinction this evening. Best of all, Gotham is Gotham: wildly handsome, sweet, goofy, and, above all, merry—our dark knight in shining armor. Gotham is owned and loved by Colleen Keough, Randy Lake, and Stephanie Kaul.

What a fun event. Mom says if I earn another title before the 2018 Cocker National Specialty she will let me do it again. Rumor has it that 2018 will have big sparkly rosettes for the Parade of Title Holders. Rosey and Solo got big sparkly rosettes when they did the parade in 2013.

The second big event is one I don’t get to attend. More on that later…..

Respectfully submitted,
:paw Gotham Roving Canine Feature Series Reporter

(Day 3 Continued)

On Saturday evening there is an awards banquet for the “Top Cocker Spaniels in 2016”.

You would think that if one’s name appears in the award catalog one would be allowed to attend the banquet, but NOOOO! People were invited; not the dogs. So I had to let Mom get the awards: a certificate for my induction to the Tracking Hall of Distinction, but more impressive, my TOP TRACKING DOG 2016 Rosette for earning my Champion Tracker.

The Last Day at the Cocker Spaniel National/Regional Specialty

Wouldn't you know it, Mom and Dad decided that since there were very nice doggy bathing facilities at Purina I should get a bath. After my bath and blow dry, I got a quick trim and Mom & I took our official show win photo. When we get that photo from the photographer I'll add it to the story.

So the 2017 cocker national show ended on Sunday evening. We saw many friends and celebrated some new titles, but it was time to head back north.

But first we had to go to a Chicago suburb, because I was going to get to meet, "Melinda".

Respectfully submitted,

And now to answer the question: "Who is Melinda?"

Melinda and Mom went to the same college for a couple of years and were on the debate team. Their first debate trip was to Western ILL University, a trip they both almost missed by over sleeping! At one time they were dating brothers. Years later Melinda was the vocalist for Mom and Dad's wedding. For awhile Melinda and her husband lived here in So. California but that was many years ago. Mom said it was 12 years since she last saw Melinda in GA. Melinda's job has her moving ever few years and she just moved to the Chicago area in April. We got to go and check out her new place.

Oh my goodness Gotham! I logged in hoping for an update, but I wasn't expecting so much. You have been a busy boy! Wow! You should be so proud of your accomplishments. So many ribbons and goodies. What a lucky boy!

I really enjoy reading about your adventures, seeing your pictures and watching your videos, especially the agility one. What fun! Unfortunately, I couldn't view the one of you in your tracking suit. But I bet you looked cute.

You are a very handsome boy with a beautiful coat. You must be a patient boy to sit still while you get groomed. Your face reminds me a lot of my Ruger. If you are ever down this way, you guys should get together. Maybe you could teach him a few obedience and agility tips. :)

Hi,
Does the video not play for you? Or is it an access issue to Youtube? It is set as "unlisted" which I thought meant as long as a person had the URL you could view the video.

Where do you and Ruger live?

I'm sorry to report that due to a complication with Mom's cataract surgery last week I have not been able to any updates to my Roadtrip 2017 Feature Series. I need Mom to download photos and right now she only has one functional eye.

Regrettably,

Oh no! I'm sorry Gotham. But don't worry. We can wait on the photos. I hope your mom's eye heals quickly!
