Hi Everyone,
I haven't been to the forum in a long time as I thought it was all on Facebook now, so was very surprised when it came up tonight.
Wanted to share the news about Diva. After double cataract surgery five years ago I was quite sad to hear the pressure in one eye was up to 21 - her surgeon is concerned about glaucoma. She goes back in next Wednesday to be rechecked and may have to have eye drops. I have done alot of reading, in fact her surgeon has an article online (the first one I pulled up) to explain a bit more. Hopefully when we go in next week her pressure will have dropped, but cockers are one of the breeds this tends to hit.
She doesn't seem to be bothered as of now, still chasing her ball and running around. Haven't seen any missed steps, etc.
Hopefully when I check back in news will be better. She is only 7 and would be so sad for her to loose her sight after fighting so hard to keep it.

I'm so sorry about Diva's eye issues. When we were looking at adopting another cocker, I was surprised to hear about all the cockers with eye issues. I didn't know this was a common problem for cockers. Seems like something should be able to help. I'm sending lots of prayers for Diva. I hope her pressure will drop and that the situation can me remedied to save her sight. Hugs to you both!

Hi Sharon, I remember sharing with you about five years ago when Diva had her cataract surgery. My Reese has also had cataract surgery among many other things concerning her eyes. Sharon, Glaucoma is a very scary word to hear in regards to our little Cockers. However, Diva's pressure of 21 is easily treatable with drops. Reese was 13 years old the end of March. When we got Reese, she had already had cataract surgery on her right eye and when we took her in for her regular checkup, she had a detached retina and had no sight in that eye. It was discovered that she had Glaucoma at that that time (in her right eye, only). We had quite a few medications (eye drops) that we had to give Reese, twice a day. It's a rather long story that I will share with you, but for tonight (it's very late), I'll just say that Diva should do just fine if she has to have drops to keep the pressure down. Reese just has one eye (her left) and her eye drops are "profolaxis." Her numbers are around 12 - 14, however, without her five eye drops twice a day and an oral medication, Methazolamide, I'm sure she would be much higher. Reese does just fine. When Reese had to have her right eye removed (due to high pressure numbers - 90 and 91) we had it biopsied. So glad we did that as it showed our veterinarian ophthalmologist that Reese's chanels are very narrow and we needed to start right away in insuring that Reese would not get glaucoma in her left eye (hence the eyedrops).

So, Sharon, we've been through a lot with our little girls. Please don't be afraid of glaucoma and I know your doctor will guide you as to the correct treatment to get Diva's pressure down to a reasonable level (12-14). She'll be just fine but I do understand the anxiety
involved when glaucoma is mentioned. It's just a matter of getting the correct treatment and sticking to it faithfully. I know you take excellent care of Miss Diva as we have compared notes several years ago. I'll share with you the eye drops that Reese is on now: Timolol, Nevanac, Tacrolimus, Azopt, and HA, in addition to her oral med, Methazolamide.

Take care, Sharon, and hugs to Miss Diva! :hp Be sure to keep us informed as to what the veterinarian has to say.

Love,
Gail and Reese :paw :hp :paw

Its sad for Cocker's and eye issues, if you can keep salt levels low it will help, cholesterol levels are critical. Diatomaceous earth can lower cholesterol when added to food 1 teaspoon a day, you will have to make the food yourself, MSN powder is also very good. It's hereditary so all you can do is prolong the on set.

So today was good news. Dr. Shirlie our eye specialist examined Diva today. Her pressures were the same as a week ago. Left eye 12 right eye 21. He feels very confident that her onset glaucoma is one that will very slowly change over time. He felt that if she lived to be 16 yrs old she many go blind in her right eye then. The glaucoma is from the cataract surgery and will slowly increase. We have eye drops for that eye twice a day - Dorzolamide HCI-Timolol. She is also to stay on the Diclofenac every other day in both eyes which I have done since her surgery 5 years ago and she has responded to so well. We are so blessed with a wonderful eye specialist who also certify's dogs for the blind, he is an extremely popular eye doctor. I am so pleased that we found him and he took Diva as a patient. There are several dogs that are prone to eye problems -- not only the American cocker, but English too! plus basset hounds, chow chows and Siberian Huskies. Although over the years of breeding American cockers have really started to get more problems through genetics. This is our 5th American cocker and we have never had any problems till Diva, but then maybe we just didn't know. :dk

Diva will go back in a week for a recheck, then as longs as things look good (or maybe even better pressures) it will be 6 weeks and then every three months to keep tabs on the speed of any changes good or bad.

Thank you everyone for your prayers and thoughts. It is so hard to have our fur babies with problems as there is no way for them to tell us what is wrong. But today Diva ran from one bed, jumping up to another to the sofa, chairs, etc. We played chase for almost a half hour and she never missed a beat.

Hugs and :paw to all of you and your fur babies,

Oh, and the good news keeps coming. Today is Diva's week check up after Dr. Shirlie started her on drops in her right eye twice a day, and pressures were great -- left eye 10 and right eye 14 :th-up . So this shall continue with the drop twice a day and a recheck in 6 weeks. As long as all goes well we then will see him every three months (for life :goof ). I am so happy :YAY Dr. Shirlie said to watch for any cloudyness, redness, or any change I might be concerned about and to bring her in right away if something comes up. But he is feeling very good about things. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful eye specialist. I wish all our fur babies could see him as he is one special doctor.

I will keep you all posted, and thanks so much for all your thoughts, prayers and emails.

:paw :love :paw Diva
