If anyone is planning on showing/competing their dogs in Florida in the near future, please be aware that there has been an outbreak of canine influenza at two recent shows. It appears to have started in Perry, FL, and most recently dogs at DeLand, FL have been affected. Here is some information about canine influenza:

1. Of the two strains of canine influenza currently active in the US, evidence indicates that the newest, H3N2, is responsible for the recent outbreak. Only identified in 2015, few dogs have immunity so a high percentage of dogs that are exposed will contract the disease.
2. Symptoms appear within a few days (2 to 4) but the dog can remain contagious for up to 26 days.
3. Up to 25% of infected dogs will show no symptoms but still remain contagious for up to 26 days.
Watch your dog for signs of illness including coughing, sneezing, or respiratory distress. If you suspect your dog is ill, CALL YOUR VET before going to their office. They do not want the virus brought into their clinic.
4. If you choose to attend other events with your dog in the coming weeks, stay informed about any post-event developments. If another event results in more sick dogs, expect OCOD to post more quarantine time-lines.
5. While most dogs will become infected through direct contact (dog to dog), the virus can live for up to 24 hours on surfaces such as clothes, shoes, flooring, etc. Even If you attend a dog event without your dog, YOU could become a carrier. Take precautions to not bring the virus into your house. Better yet, stay home.
