Donna,

What a happy update! Glad to hear that Maya is doing a little better and that the turmeric paste, etc. is helping. That's fantastic! Just curious, how did you know to try the turmeric? I know it's beneficial but didn't know you could make a paste with it. Online research? I'm assuming your vet didn't recommend it unless he/she is holistic. I'm all for trying alternative therapies. Hope it continues to help her heal!!

Thanks for posting pics of her too. So good to see her with her Christmas presents. Such a beautiful dog. Hugs to you and give her one for me please!!

So sorry it has taken so long to answer your question. When I heard of the diagnosis I joined a bunch of groups on FB and got soooo much information thrown at me on what to try, what to do. For just a bit I did nothing as really there are a lot of different things to do and I couldn't process anything. However the tumeric struck me as something I had heard before and I decided to go with that one. Tumeric alone really doesn't do a whole lot as it is not water soluble. This is the recipe for the paste, boiling it breaks it down and the coconut oil and fresh ground pepper are to make it more easily absorbed.

Turmeric must be consumed with some form of fat or oil in order to be absorbed. It is not water soluble and will simply be eliminated if no fat is present. Adding freshly ground black pepper extends the time that it's active in your body.
We strongly suggest using turmeric in the form of Golden Paste, as it includes all the ingredients that make turmeric both well absorbed and bioavailable.
To prepare Golden Paste:
INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup (65-70g, or about 2.6 oz dry weight) turmeric powder
1-2 cups (250-500ml) water (use half the total amount to begin with and have the other half ready if needed)
1/3 cup (70ml) coconut, olive or linseed oil (or salmon oil for dogs, but please see the note below)
3 tsp (about 7g) freshly ground black pepper
DIRECTIONS:
Combine the turmeric and water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to keep the mixture at a simmer, and cook for 7-10 minutes. Stir frequently to keep from sticking, and add more water as need to keep it to a paste consistency. The exact thickness isn't important--you can adjust that to your preference.
Remove it from the heat and allow it to cool until the pan is just warm to the touch. Add the oil and pepper and stir thoroughly until they are completely mixed in. Store in a clean jar (you can sterilize it if you like) in the refrigerator. It should keep for about two weeks. If you see any sign of mold, or notice an 'off' flavor, discard and make a new batch.

It seems to be working for us, that is all I know. So far so good with Maya. We had an increase in a node last week but it was after a few softer stools. The Orijen seems a bit rich for her so am mixing that right now with another food and adding more boiled chicken than I had been. That seemed to help and the node has gone down a bit now. It has been so dang cold here we cannot get outside lately to do anything. For a few days it never got above zero! Supposed to hit 11 today though!

Last time we got out to play was Jan 1st...

Don't be sorry, I'm sure you have your hands full. But I really appreciate you answering my questions. My Ruger has been suffering with a lot of itchiness lately so I've been trying to garner all the info I can from the internet, the vet and others. Information overload. Sometimes it's a bit overwhelming. Have to figure out what to try, etc. I know if I were in your shoes, I'd be doing the same thing. I'm really glad you gave the Golden Paste a try. Thank you for sharing the recipe. I will be keeping that recipe on hand in case I ever need it. I'm glad the node has gone down some. Praying that little Maya continues to improve.

It is so cute to see Maya playing in the snow. I'm in Florida so no snow to play in here, but I bet our dogs would love it. Not so sure about the 11 degrees though. Yikes! I don't miss that.

You have some pretty girls! I always enjoy your pics. Take care! :)

I have made the golden paste for myself. Is a great natural remedy. Wish I had known about this remedy when my dear Holly was alive.

Donna, I have been thinking of you since you posted, I am so sorry. I always love your beautiful pics of your dogs.

This winter we snowbirded in Florida and kinda adopted an elderly lady in our development who needed help with stuff, easy for us but hard for her. She just lost her husband, so we helped fix her toilet, adjust sprinklers, changed batteries, etc. No charges, just a neighborly pay it forward. Her name is Maya, and everytime we saw her I thought of your sweet baby. Maybe its the name, but she is as sweet as your Maya.

I was so sad to log onto the forum this morning and read this news. I was hoping your beautiful Maya would overcome this. I'm so sorry for your loss. You did all you could for Maya. She was lucky to have you and I'm sure you feel the same way about having her. Sending thoughts and prayers and hugs your way.

So very sorry to hear about Maya.
Donna, I so enjoyed the beautiful pics of your crew and Maya's personality really shone through in every one. I especially love the ones of her tearing through the snow. May she run free and happy at the bridge.
