Sherman is almost 4 years old and is house-trained, but...we keep a pee pad out during the day "just in case". Inevitably, he has gone on the pad when we get home and after a new pad is put out in the evening, he will pee on that too! I don't know if we should not put out a pad and will he hold his pee, or just go on the rug. In other words, are we just enabling him to pee whenever he feels like it!?

My thoughts are that he knows what it's for. Since it's there, why not use it.

I'd say enabling.

I agree on the enabling. I have never taught my puppies/dogs to relieve themselves inside our home. Outside is only appropriate place. :th-up

I used to use the pee pads while I was potty training KC, but after I hung a bell on our front door he never used it again. He tells me he has to go potty by ringing the bell and then plopping down in front of the door and waits for me to bring him outside to do his buisness. I think he prefers to do it in the grass outside the home.

When it is pouring down rain I lay a few pee pads on the front porch and have him go on that, but he still wants to pull me to the grass!

I think letting him have a way of communicating that he needs to go potty to you will help him hold it until your ready to take him out.
