Hi Everyone,

My KC just turned 4 months and is an absolute sweet heart, except when he is over tired (staying up durring the day longer than 6 hours at a time). He starts to ask for attention by following us around or jumping into our lap with a chew toy, then while we are petting him he will start to nip at us. We try to correct him by putting him down or walking away and saying, NO. He will just follow us and chew and growl on our ankles or feet. We then put him in his crate, but while that's happening he is growling and trying to bite, and well, just throwing a tantrum. Is this normal or do you all think he has aggresive tendencies?
Does anybody know how long 4-5 month olds should be sleeping each day and exercising? KC usualy sleeps 30 min to an hour in the afternoon, and sleeps all night long. Then we will get up in the morning and run for 10 or 15 min. If you have any advice it would help a lot. Thanks.

Sounds like a perfectly normal puppy trying to find his place in the pack, and also testing his boundaries. Just be consistant in rewarding good behavior and redirecting unwanted behavior. He'll grow out of it.

It's perfectly normal and you are doing the right thing.

I would probably get him to rest a bit more during the day though. Perhaps an hour in the crate a couple of times a day would help to stop him being too overtired.

Also giving him lots of stuff to chew will help a bit too, e.g. a stuffed kong, treat balls etc.

:sm Thanks for the advice. I am going to try to let KC sleep a bit more in the afternoon and see if that helps.

Rose,

Welcome to the forum! You pup is adorable! He sounds like a typical puppy! Your doing a good job with him. As for the ankle biting... think of it from his view point... your legs and feet are fun interactive toys. He bites you react by pulling away ... that's fun for him! Try completely stopping when he bites .. hard for you, but boring for him. Just like a child having a tantrum... the less you react the quicker they get over it.

He may be teething too. Try giving him things that are cold to help sooth the pain.

Thanks for all the support everyone. I was relieved to here I was doing the right things with this nippy behavior. Now it is 10 days later, and he has chilled out a little bit. I have been giving him a little bit more quiet time in his crate from time to time. I think it is helping. Plus, I find that when I stop moving my feet he stops trying to nip at them, he does think they are toys :ROFL !
