How do the ISO ratings on digital cameras compare to the ISO/ASA settings on a film camera? How high of an ISO number can you comfortably use without a lot of grain/noise.

In my days of film cameras, we always tried to use film with the lowest ISO/ASA rating to get the job done for good sharp photos with the minimum of grain -- rarely using anything over ISO/ASA 400.

The digital ISO ratings of 3200 -- 6400 seem so intimidating; I can't imagine using them. I would think that the grain/noise would be so great that the photo wouldn't be worth taking.

i believe your camera is good up to ISO 800 just like my t2i
after that you will start noticing noise in your pics.

I know this is an old post but I thought I would chime in.

I shoot with 2 Nikon D4s cameras and a Nikon D810 camera.

The D4s you can shoot up to ISO 10,000 without worrying if needed. 6400 is the safe spot that is very clean.

The Nikon D810 looks great at ISO 6400.

A couple of samples.

Nikon D4s ISO 10,000 room lit by a lamp and candles.
