From the moment I saw her picture, I knew she was mine. Thankfully Bob needed little convincing even though I always told him when it came to me bringing home pets he was supposed to be the voice of reason. Maxine came home with us on September 5th, 2009. She came in the way she did most things – quietly. A rescue at the age of 12 or 13 years, blind from having lost both eyes, scared, with a bad heart and stiff joints she stood proudly in her new back yard raised her freckled nose and sighed in all the new smells.

That was her last “quiet” moment. She followed it up with getting into the flour bin (not one but twice till we moved it), the bread box (until we no longer used it to store bread products), the dishwasher (from where she unashamedly stole silverware), the fish food (how did she unscrew the lid to eat it all?), and that doesn’t count climbing onto tables, chairs, grills and woodpiles. She spent hours walking the yard with a freedom she savored or resting next to the fish pond listening to the waterfall. She went mountain climbing in Vermont, swimming in lakes and pools, ate like a truck driver and slept like a rock. In her last few months she had her own “column” on Zim Family Cocker Spaniel Forum where she expounded on the foolishness of some humans, her concern for the earth and all the animals – especially doggies that didn’t have all that she found to comfort her in her later years and sharing her ideas and humor. She gave great thought to the “Big One” who looks out for us all.

Earlier today the Big One came to take back His beloved Maxine. He gently took her from the arms of her momma and poppa and the loving circle of her brothers and sister. Her work here was done. She touched thousands of hearts and gave us all her love and her trust. I am humbled that my husband and I could provide our girl with the comforts of her last years. As I was warned when we took her in at such an advanced age and with her medical conditions “You’re setting yourself up to have your heart broken” – and today that is true.

Maxine, you were one in a million – as Jean and Isabel say “maybe more”. I know you are with the Big One on the Rainbow Bridge waiting for us. You are with your big brother Coriander, Isabew's big brothers Joey and Bear, Weesister, Abby and Abby Girl, and so many of our precious pups gone before. I am sure you are being treated royally because you lived the way we all should: enduring our hurts, forgiving those that cause the hurts, rejoicing in our blessings, sharing our love and trusting in others. I know when I get to the Bridge to meet you I will see you whole and happy and I will be able to look into your eyes for the first time ever and tell you I love you. And you will look back at me and let me know that you already knew that. Because my dear pup – that was you – pure love.

RIP, Maxine. We're all holding a minute of silence for you. Now you will be able to look upon us and really "see" your family - both near and extended.

We love you.

Maxine, we will miss you, but you have taught all of us that age is only a number and that we make the most of what we are given. Rest in peace and run free and see all there is to be seen at the Rainbow Bridge. We love you. :hp :paw

RIP, precious. Your job, indeed, was more than fulfilled by bringing love to those who knew you well, and those you never met. I've asked Shiloh to help you to feel comfortable. Two red and white parti girls at the Bridge might be just a little much, but I'm sure you'll have friends galore within a matter of minutes.

Sending prayers of peace for you and Bob, Vickie. I'm so, so sorry for your loss today, but so happy you got to experience the joy of Maxine, as well. Take care.

Vickie,

I'm so sorry for your loss of Miss Maxine today. Your commentary on her life is beautiful, it brought tears. God bless you, Vickie and Bob, for the beautiful life you gave Maxine, she certainly was a very special girl. :hp My Bonnie girl is at the Bridge, too, and I'm sure she's giving Maxine a warm welome. :luv

Vickie, Bob and family,

Vickie, I know that we have discussed, at length, this day. But, I had thought that we would be talking about Moonbeam. I am so very sorry :cry for your loss. I know from our conversations just how much you loved Miss Maxine. I know that your heart is breaking right now and that you are going to have a very rough time for a while. I hope that you will find comfort in all the love that this forum has given to you and your Maxine. Hopefully, this LOVE will help your and Bob's broken hearts heal in time. Thinking of all the "crazy" :goof things that Maxine pulled off and smiling at her antics might help as well. Take Care! We all love you and your stories about your Maxine The Rapscallion Doggie! :hp

Miss Maxine, You have been on a long journey serving your beloved humans here on Earth. You have given us much joy, love, many laughs and in general made our lives much better. You will certainly be missed by all of those who read about your antics, your thoughts, your pondering's on life, the love that you have given to all of us and the love you gave to your family.

REST IN PEACE LITTLE ONE. WE LOVE YOU..... :angel
RUN FREE! :run

Vickie and Bob
Miss Maxine was indeed “pure love” and she had that pure love given back to her the last couple of years of her life.
She showed us all what it is to love.
She also has taken with her many pieces of hearts that we have all freely given her.
I for one look forward to the day that I can give Miss Maxine the kiss on the nose I have always wanted to give her.
Thank you Vickie and Bob for sharing this precious one with us.
May God send his love to hold you tight and help you thru this.
:hp :hp :hp

Vicki, I sit here with tears streaming down my face feeling as though I have lost one of my own. Maxine was truly a gift sent to us straight from the hand of God and she showed us how to truly live our lives. I know she is probably causing all sorts of mischief on the other side of the bridge. I lost my dad two years ago so I'm sure he was waiting on the otherside to welcome her and keep an eye on her until you meet her again. :hp Sending you hugs, prayers and love. Thank you so much for sharing the Amazing Maxine with us.

I've been dreading logging onto the forum tonite for fear of reading this. The forum simply will not be the same without hearing about Miss Maxine's antics. Thank you for loving her, sharing her with us, and for making all of us fall in love with her, too. My heart goes out to you.

I, too, will be making a donation to a rescue in Miss Maxine's memory. Gromit is sitting on my lap licking the tears off my cheeks, telling me in her own quiet way that it's the least we can do.

God bless you.

Vickie - i am at a total loss of what to say. I sit here with tears streaming down my face uncontrollably. I can't stop them from coming down. A piece of my heart is broken tonight so i can't even imagine how you and Bob must be feeling. I am sending lots of lots of hugs to you both and to Annie, Teddy and Cody who are going to be missing their sweet dear sister.
I have had the HONOR of meeting Ms. Maxine a few times and each time i fell in love with this little "rapscallion" dog. she was truly amazing and despite not having eyes and being able to see she truly did "see" the world and made everyone's heart smile. I take comfort in knowing that Maxine is now running around, pain free, greeting all those at the bridge and that she is seeing the wonderful colors of this world from up above. She has greeted the "Big One" and is now thinking of ways to get into something.

She was truly wonderful and you and your family are amazing people for loving this wonderful old girl!!!!

RIP MS. MAXINE. I LOVE YOU DEARLY AND I WILL CHERISH BEING IN THE SAME ROOM AS YOU AS YOU GOT THE BEST STANDING OVATION YOU SO MUCH DESERVED ON SUNDAY!!! :hp :hp :hp

i will try and stop crying now and smile for you!!!

watch out for your momma and your poppa and brothers and sisters.

I was really hoping today would not bring this news. I'm so sorry Vickie & Bob. May you find joy and comfort in the antics pulled off by Miss Maxine, and may the smile they bring to you replace the tears of sorrow you are experiencing today.

Vickie: I am SO sorry to hear Maxine has gone over the Rainbow Bridge.

I will never forget the picture posted on Facebook - of that sad, little girl - looking as though the world had deserted her. Then a wonderful thing happened - you and your husband opened your hearts and home to her - and gave her the life she had never known. I will be forever grateful to you as are many others.

She made my day - reading about her antics - concern over her vet visits - she brought such joy to everyone on the forum and will be greatly missed. She made the world a much brighter place for us. She was a very, very special girl.

You wrote a beautiful commentary on her life - and from the bottom of my heart - I thank you for giving her a wonderful life. I know you are heartbroken now - but in time - the joy she brought you will lessen the sorrow you are feeling right now.

R.I.P. Little one - we all love you !

God Bless
