Just 378 days 4 hours isn't long enough to have a pet. This is all the time we had with our Calvin. We got him on September 12, 2015 from Second Chance Cocker on a sunny Saturday afternoon. He was a stray picked up in Bakersfield on August 28, 2015. We believed he was an outside dog. When we got him home, he seemed to feel better outside than inside. He would drink a lot of water an pee a lot. He always ate his dinner real fast. We assume that he was fed and given water whenever someone remembered. He loved to jump.

Everything was fine when I woke up early Saturday morning to take Calvin to agility class. He woke up early for his short walk. I was making my breakfast, because 5:30 is too early to feed our dogs. Teddy and Calvin were in the in the kitchen with me. All of a sudden, I saw blood on the floor. First, I checked Teddy, then Calvin and then me. I didn't know where the blood was coming from. I finally found where it was coming from, Calvin's penis. It had stopped. I ate, fed our dogs and took them for a walk. Everything seemed to be fine with Calvin.

Calvin and I went to agility class. He ran around, as he always did while we set up the obstacles. When we started class, he didn't want to jump. We stopped. He stopped to pee and it seemed like only blood came out.

Concerned, we took Calvin to the vet. In June, he had a skin tumor removed and he was fine. The vet found nothing wrong, but at the last minute did an ultrasound. On the ultrasound, he found a blatter tumor. He gave us a pain killer and an antibiotic. He didn't have the drug that could possibly reduce the tumor, but he would have it in a couple of days.

We took Calvin home. We had to get doggy diapers for him so if he bled it wouldn't be all over our house. All afternoon, he couldn't poo and when he peed it was mainly blood. He ate diner as normal, but couldn't go to the bathroom on the walk after dinner. He did peed in our backyard, mainly blood. We spoke to the vet again in the evening. He told us to monitor him. The drug that was coming would help.

I slept with him Saturday night and took him out every hour or two to TRY to go to the bathroom. He appeared to just pee blood. He ate a good breakfast, but didn't go to the bathroom on the morning walk. He wanted to go out every half hour or so to try to go to the bathroom. He didn't seem to get comfortable when he tried to sleep. He was getting very lethargic. When you tried to pick him up, he would growl at you. He was in pain. The pain medicine wasn't helping. We spoke to the vet again. He told us that we would have to make the decision to put him down. He could be at his office in 15 minutes. We needed a little more time.

When he didn't get up to eat dinner, we knew it was time. He ad absolutely no interest in eating.

When we call another vet last night to have a dog PTS, they thought it was out Lacey at 13 1/2. Unfortunately, it was one of our dogs, but not Lacey.

He was such a sweet, affectionate dog. He wouldn't let you put on your shoes thinking that you were leaving forever. He would howl in the morning when he was happiest. He always wanted a belly rub at anytime. He was always happiest finding which direction you were going. He was not in the best situation for the first four years of his life, but for the last 378 days four hours he was loved. Five years total was way too short.

We will miss him terribly. We love you Calvin. Please look for our Abby. You never met, but you are both at the Rainbow Bridge. Please tell each other about us.

I'm so sorry. You're right,4 years isn't nearly enough. But they were 4 years where you made such a difference in his life-take comfort in that.

Thank you for your thoughts.

He were just starting to learn agility.

He was a great jumper.

When he didn't have the strength to eat, I knew that he was ready to join our Abby.

Louis

Knowing that we did everything for Calvin before we made the worst decision of his life, I still feel guilty.

We have his ashes and will do something appropriate with them when the time comes.
