Last Wednesday I had to give up my sweet Darjeeling.
A month earlier, I'd discovered several large lumps in her neck. The next day, the vet diagnosed advanced lymphoma. Cancer was spread through all the lymph nodes in her little body. She thought maybe 2 months to go.
Prednisone took down much of the swelling, making her joints more comfortable.

But I didn't get my second month.
A after a while the inflammation returned, and no matter how much she ate, she kept losing weight.

When I got home Monday night her breathing was pretty rough. It had been a record hot day, yet she cooled down and as the evening went on, she got better.
But Tuesday night about 8 or 9 o'clock she started to shut down. She ate fine, but was no longer interested in her ball or squeaky toys, was hesitant to walk in the yard any more than necessary, and once in bed her breathing was rapid and shallow.

I took off work Wednesday to have the day with her (I am blessed with understanding bosses). Vet appointment was at 2:30. When the vet came in, Darjee went to meet her, then laid down on the floor right next to where the vet had crouched down to be with her, didn't roll on her back, tail didn't wag. She agreed, it was time.
She had a few more days in her, but I just didn't want to put her through it.

Darjee was a sweet, gentle girl for all the 6 1/2 years she was with me. She had her times of being a stinker and getting into trouble, but she was my little girl, the girl who mended my heart when Jasmine died. The girl who stole my heart the first moment I saw her parti-face on a rescue site.
It took some convincing for the foster mom/rescue operator to consider a single woman who worked full time, but my emails and the recommendations of friends and vet won her over.

I miss you, my Darjeeling.

Oh, Beth, I'm so sorry. I hadn't seen you on the forum in a while and was wondering how you all were doing. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Rest in peace sweet Darjeeling, she is free of pain, but will be greatly missed. :cry

Thank you, everyone.
I haven't been on the forum much this past year, but knew this was the place to come for this.

Since Darjeeling died, Nilgiri is doing fine. The girls never really bonded: Niri always wanted to play and Darjee mostly just felt put upon to have this noisy-barky thing around. Niri looked for Darjee for a few days. She's actually calmed down a bit (that's relative b/c she IS only 2 years old) since Darjee's passing, maybe because she no longer has to vie for my attention or constantly pester Darjee.
Tomorrow afternoon I pick up her ashes and a cast of her footprint, all to go next to Jasmine's in the china cabinet.

I'm so sorry. I know what a loss it is when we loose one of our loved ones. I loved her name - how fun to have an inventive mommy. I know you gave her a wonderful life. I hope your happy memories will help ease the pain through the upcoming weeks and months.
