We are approaching Misty's first season with an intact male in the house. This is something I have no experience with and I would like to make it as easy as possible and especially avoid any "mistakes".

So, I am looking for any and all advice on how to handle things. Should I keep them entirely separate for the entire three week period? They are usually confined separately in the same room when I am not home. Should we go as far to keep them in separate parts of the house?

Does this mean my husband and I will be staying in separate parts of the house? LOL, I think either one of them would be unhappy knowing we are home but not having a human to be with them.

Anything else?

Thanks so much!

I have 2 neutered males who are absolutely nutsy when the girls go into season. Even tho they are both neutered, they have dreadful fights during that time, and we have to totally separate them, the instinct and urges are so strong.

I am sure some of the breeders will chime in, but I think an intact male is going to have an even stronger reaction. I have read that people say it is kinder to remove the inact male from the home during a bitch's season, and that makes it much easier on everyone who lives in the home.

Wow, Marianne, I guess I am lucky that Rocky (who is neutered) didn't react at all last time she was in season.

However, it may be that he is smart enough that he knows not to mess with Misty :lol2

You are lucky! Maybe my boys are just oversexed! :goof
Seriously tho, my neutered boys try to breed the girls, it is not a fun time!
Last time the boys really had a bad fight, and my arm got in the way while trying to break it up.
I am planning to spay both Bridgette and Leila before they go into next season.

Fortunately Farley has never cared about females in season, but Jack Jack does. He whines, barks and howls. It makes me CRAZY. When Grace was in season, the two of them were kept completely and totally separate at all times for the entire three weeks. It wasn't fun, but I didn't want mistakes. Of course, then when I *did* want them to breed, Jack Jack had no idea what to do or how to do it LOL

Keep them completely separated. We use crates, on different floors, behind gates and doors, etc. If two barriers are enough, I prefer 6! Rhett never got too bothered by it. He is neutered now and ignores the girls entirely. Bo and Zephyr get very worked up and seem to make each other worse. If I had the option to send them away I would.

Thanks all.

Erika, I hope it is much easier on Ethan than his half brother.

Erika,
You can send those gorgeous boys to me for a few weeks! :gig

Agree, completely separated for at least 3 week, 4 is safer. If your boys start howling / refusing food / throwing up with overexcitement, you may need to find a handy friend who can have them for a week or two in the middle. And don't forget it's not just the boys that will have the urge to get to the girl - the girl can be a total tart too!

Oh Yes! Bridgette throws herself in front of the boys, it is awful. She makes the situation much worse, she is such a tease.

Oh, great. I did not know about the girls! Misty is so absolutely full of herself. I didn't nickname her "Trouble" for nothing. This will be interesting!
