You should put your Cocker at risk while on a trip. Get him/her one of these Dog Car Seats.

I would day no. Just like a child they either need to be strapped in or in a crate (the dog not the kid). Hmmm :lol2 kidding!
A dog or person of any size is like a bullet if you were to have to slam on the brakes. Using the straps and crates may require more stops for stretches.

Agree. Plenty of harnesses and seats available with safety straps. Or a crate. If they are sitting lose, they may as well just sit on the seat.

Gromit would never go for this. Too top heavy, she wouldn't feel secure. I'll stick to buckling her to the seat belt with her harness for short trips, or her crate for longer ones.
