Gromit started the day yesterday with a perfect run in Excellent Standard preferred, and a 1st Place win. When she feels like it, the run is so easy! Unfortunately, I can't say the same about JWW. We can't seem to get out of open! Yesterday, she only had 1 refusal, but we ran over time. The problem with competing in two different levels is that as I was lined up to run std, they were already walking the jww course, so it was rush, finish the std course and then almost immediately run the jww course without a break! Gromit just wasn't ready to run again so soon and it showed in her attention. Oh well, one awesome run for the day was worth it!

Congratulations on your EXCELLENT run! Love those blue ribbons! :th-up

I hear you on the competing at two different levels. Chessie and I will be competing for the first time since April. I just started doing FAST (so much fun!) so we are Novice but running Masters in STD. Our run/walk times may overlap. I can't wait to see where we are in the running order to see if I will have a conflict. They didn't allow you to move down in the running order due to the conflict? Our people are usually pretty cooperative about things like that.

I remember open jumpers being tougher for Chessie too.... how many legs do you need?

If I had asked, I'm sure they would have moved us down. But I had checked the JWW schedule, which was after the T2B runs, and there were still a lot of dogs that needed to run T2B before the JWW runs started that I really didn't think there'd be a conflict. Guess I learned my lesson there! I need 2 more legs in Open JWW, and only 1 more in Ex. Std. We've never tried time to beat or FAST.

Well I think I'll learn from your lesson. I'm going to mark myself as a conflict on Thursday. Unless they are really running behind I think it's going to be too close for my comfort.

Sounds like you and Gromit are doing very well! I find JWW so much more difficult than STD. Chessie tends to try to make her own courses. :bang

I've only done FAST twice but I LOVE it! Chessie does too.... see above note about making her own courses. :gig FAST is tailor made for her! I thought it looked so hard when I first saw it but the novice sends are very easy for Chessie. I'm using it this week as a way to take some of her adrenaline edge off before our STD run. Hopefully that will allow her to focus better. Give it a try ... it's a blast!

Good luck getting those final legs!

Love the video!

It is lovely to watch our puppers advance to the higher levels of competition over the years.

That was awesome! I've never seen any of the events you participate in and I confess I don't always understand the posts that include lots of initials... but that was so much fun to watch! I especially loved seeing her get ready for the big celebration at the end! :th-up

Susan,

Once you become immersed in the agility world you tend to forget that not everyone knows what those initials mean... sorry about that. To be honest I still go to the AKC web site to look up unfamiliar ones. :happy

Used in this thread:
JWW = Jumpers with Weaves
STD = Standard Agility
T2B = Time to beat (a game where you try to beat the fastest posted score of the day)
F.A.S.T. = F = Fifteen. A = And. S = Send. T = Time. (another game where you make up your own course but must include a set "send" determined by the judge.)

The official rules for the games are posted at AKC if your interested. Agility has several levels of competition. Novice, Open, Excellent and Masters. There are different requirements to earn each level. JWW and STD are two different courses. JWW - only has jumps, weaves and tunnels. STD is the one with all the fun play equipment. (A-frame, Teeter, Dog Walk and Table) That is what Gromit is running in the video.

There is more to agility but this is a very basic explanation. Hope it helps... feel free to ask any questions!

Great explanation, Lisa. We do sometimes forget that others may not know the "lingo". I know I frequently can't translate all the alphabet soup after some pupper's names!

Congrats to you and Gromit!!

Belle and I started our agility journey this past February (2015). I am having soooo much fun! While we have had a few ups and downs (pooping in the ring twice! Second time I was seriously ready to quit!) and finding out that I cannot lead out, need to start with Belle to get rid of some separation issues at the start line, all in all we have had a great year! By summer we had our AKC Novice Agility and Novice Jumpers titles and in Nov we earned our Open Agility and Open Agility Jumpers titles so are now in Excellent. The issues with the start line just got figured out in Nov so I am hoping things get better from here on out. Next trial is in Jan. trialed 14 days in this past year so far only at one facility that is about an hour from our house. We have also tried FAST five times and have two legs in Novice FAST. The first two times we tried were at our first two trials and were so not ready for it. Then I didn't do it again until Sept and now it seems pretty easy for the most part. We also have one leg in Excellent Standard. I really wish I would have done this with Maya, she would have been good at it too I think and then I would know what the heck I was doing too, instead of being a new handler with a new dog. lol!
