That is a good suggestion- I'll listen for that.

We've been paying close attention to his triggers and tried different things based on our behaviorist suggestions.

So far, it is looking like he is doing "demand barking and howling".. He goes to work with me and now all of us in the office have to ignore him when he does it - and keep treats for when he STOPS himself and is quiet for a certain period of time.

We can see him work himself up into the howl. And, often it is when he has decided he wants our attention and we are busy.

Alro has been with us non stop since we brought him home at 8 weeks. He is only away from us a few hours each week. Since he was always sick with something we've always babied him....

We are amazed at how each stage is a new chapter and as we've never had children - Wow! We have a new found respect for parents.. Because we feel literally like we have a child who needs our protection and that WE must fight for those answers to get him the help he needs to become a full, happy, heathy family member.

This week Arlo began his agility lessons and he LOVED it.. So... a video will come soon.

:)

Great idea to do Agility! From the video's you've posted here it is obvious that Arlo is an extremely intelligent pup. Some dogs NEED a job and will find trouble if that work is not provided for them. Agility is a great way to give Arlo a job. it will also help with confidence issues he may (or may not) have.

Two warnings for you....
1. Agility is addicting. :th-up
2. It's easier for the dog to learn than the handler. :gig

Can't wait to see the video's!
Good luck!

Good few days for Arlo.

First - we are beginning to get a handle on feeding him and noticing if he is starting to get "toxic".

Next - Arlo is loving agility - we'll shoot some video tomorrow Monday when he gets his 2nd lesson.

Finally - Here in LA there is a wonderful park in W LA called Rancho Park.
The people that go there all live near by and are very careful pet owners. So, the dogs there are healthy and under their owners control.
And, IF someone were to be a lazy owner - the regulars there step in and make sure all dogs are safe.

Because of this - it is the only place we feel safe taking Arlo to meet other dogs.

Yesterday ... we went and met a family of cockers!

And, we met a lovely black female rescue. We filmed her by Arlo because we hope soon (within months) to have a sister or brother (black) for Arlo.
He loves other dogs and it had always been our plan to do once Arlo got through his initial puppy months.

Here are some cute cockers. 100% of them (except Arlo) are rescues.

So, today the behaviorist came to work with Arlo. She was with us for over 2 hours.
By the end of the session - she determined that Arlo's howling is a temper tantrum and not medical.

Today he howled about 5 or 6 times. I promise I'll get a recording soon.... We are SO embarrassed when he does this .. and can't wait for THIS stage to pass..

I asked a few people when their Cockers settled down - and most say 2 years. Oh dear. Arlo is just about 10 months. !

ANYway... Our new treatment is to:
A - Leave the room and ignore him (we actually already did this).
B - We now are playing relaxing doggie music (I'll post the link as Melinda actually has that info).
C - We are to sit with him ... play the music and breeeeth.... inhale and let out sighs...
The idea is to help him learn to relax.

After the behaviorist left ... Melinda and I looked at each other. The work ahead of us felt crushing.
We said maybe we should do the OTHER style of training and just lie to the behaviorist. - the "other" way is the one the male Vet told us to do. Which is, to put our thumb in his mouth and press down on his tongue until he gags. - not a bad gag. Just uncomfortable.

Of course we won't do the "other" way... But, while he does that howling... we sure do feel like...
"why I oughta"

Leigh,

Have you tried a water spray bottle and spray him when he howls? This is working for Muraco's incessant barking. :bang

Good luck and please give little cutie Arlo some :smch :smch :smch :smch 'S for me.... :love

Dawn :paw

Wow! I'm so impressed that the behaviorist could identify that it is behavioral rather than physical. Good behaviorists are worth their weight in gold, in my book.

And now that you have that confirmed, I have a suggestion for you, kind of in between what the vet said, what the behaviorist said, and building on what Dawn said: Spray water bottle, with a verbal "SH!" (no vowel sound there, just a quick and urgent, one syllable, SH!)

The idea is to startle him FROM the behavior, in this case, his howling, so it's a very quick squirt of the water, not really spray at all. The verbal is so that as time progresses, and if you're out and about somewhere without the water bottle, you still have a verbal cue for the same behavior. Most dogs reach a point quickly where if they see you even reach for the water bottle, they will stop. And you can continue to use the SH! for all manner of "leave it" things and behaviors.

I learned combining the two both a Patricia McConnell book and from a TTouch trainer; I've used this technique to extinguish many different behaviors in foster cockers, with great success.

Good luck to you and Arlo. Let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the spray water tip. We will try this.
So, I assume one quick spray - not several.
Along with SH.

I forgot the say the behaviorist has us doing.

A time out signal and sh (finger to lips).
But, really that has done nothing...

I'll try the water and let you all know.

Thanks again:)

PS - Today (so far) Arlo has been a dear and only howled a few times.

Yes, I agree with Chris, one spray! With Arlo and his condition that would probably be best. I do more with Muraco but he is just a "bone head". Lovingly stated! :love But, maybe I will try Chris's method too. She has given me some great advice. Can't argue with that at all! :th-up

I use a spray bottle adjusted to a stream setting. The water stream reaches a longer distance, which is what you will want, so Arlo will be startled when the water hits him.
Also, you might want to have several spray bottles around the house, so one is handy for a quick water shot to catch the behavior as soon as it happens.

With my 4 dogs I use the spray bottle and a "Quiet" command. And, as Chris said, 2 of mine will hush or stop the behavior as soon as they see me pick up the spray bottle. Louie, however, doesn't mind water, so it doesn't really stop him very well. And princess Leila never does anything wrong, so she never gets the water sprayed at her.

Actually, it's more of a quick squirt than a spray.

Yep... just a quick, out of the blue, squirt to startle and hopefully interrupt the behavior. We call our bottle the BBB = the Bad Behavior Bottle. :wink

Dear humans and fellow dogs.
My mom showed me a chart today that shows my age.

I just learned that I am about 14 years old (in human years) and this might be one more reason I am so bratty. Mom says I better straighten up or she'll consider sending me away to summer camp.

I thought I'd share the chart with you.

Love, Arlo

Mom said she is buying a "BBB" today.
She said it kinda funny, so I can't tell if I should be excited or scared.

We're using the spray bottle, too, but it's only having an effect on Waylon - who has been sprayed once and that is enough for him, thank you. EMMA, on the other hand, grabs (fill in the blank) and ruuuuuuuunns very fast so that the squirt can't reach her. To her, it's another game. She recognizes it for what it's worth, though, so she at least knows to run before I can get her. We'll keep it up for a while. BTW: Emma was two in June and she's still a brat.

Hey Chessie

I could tell from your post that BBB was not a good thing.
So, today - so far - I have not howled one single time.

Mom is very confused.

So, she got all nostalgic and looked at the photo she took of me the first day I came home.

Then she took one today when we were out getting coffee... where, by the way, I was perfectly behaved.
A nice man even stopped and told me I was handsome.

Wow, I want to go to have breakfast in Malibu!
What an awesome place!
Arlo looks like he is having a great time, as do both of you as well.
And that basset hound is certainly big!
I love how Arlo's white coat is so bright white!

Is this place actually called Malibu Ranch?
When I googled that name, I got results that look like it is a weight loss clinic...not that that would be a bad idea for me... :gig but not what I was expecting.

Marianne- it is a big outdoor ranch and they have several acres.

Weddings etc. AND - on the property is the spa - we think - that they film "biggest loser" the tv show.

We just loved the band - bought their music. Food great- And I enjoyed my bloody mary.

There were many cool dogs. About 4 dogs live on the property and played great with arlo. The Bassett Hound being our favorite.

When I get home - still out having fun day:)- I will post link to the Malibu cafe ...

We just finished our spa experience - on way to pick up famous mozza pizza and home for tv time!! What a pleasant day.

So happy to see Arlo (my love) so happy too! :YAY :Clap :joy :love

You two do deserve a lovely day with yourselves and Arlo. After all the three of you have been though! You are very much on the top of the "good day to all" list! :hp Beautiful place too!

Thanks for keeping us so informed. I, for one, really do appreciate your efforts. :nw

Dawn :paw

On a side note: Both Marianne and I went to Google to look up the location. We both are RV owners and are always looking for great places to visit. I am surmising that this was Marianne's thought, but I KNOW it was mine. :gig Actually, I even went to Google Maps to see how far we would have to travel. My guess was 400 miles and I was very close. Gas is always a concern for Kevin and myself. :bang
