Video of Arlo today doing well on "medical management".

Leigh,

That video is awesome! I am hopeful that the "Medical Management" will be enough. Since he has improved this much. Secondly, I have to hope that, if he does have a shunt, that it is external and operable. From what you are saying, that would be a good scenario.

If you have to go to New York, so be it, in my humble opinion. But, I am not in your shoes and won't pretend to tell you what you should do. I have heard that Vickie is a Great cook and she did so kindly offer you a place to stay. :wk

Big hugs and :smch :smch :smch for handsome Arlo. :luv Your cat, Diablo, is beautiful as well. :hp

Dawn :paw :hp

Sending my best wishes, visualizations and my prayers too! :hp

The latest Arlo video shows a happy, well-loved dog fully enjoying himself! How very sweet this pup is! And encouraging that there is great results from the medical management regiment.
Hoping you get some good news from Arlo's test results.

What a lucky puppy to have such devoted parents. I am praying that treatment works for him so he can enjoy a long and spoiled, pampered life by a family who loves him very much. He deserves it, and you do also.

Arlo UPDATE- Test Results.

Hold your hats - I said earlier that Arlo's medical life has been a series of non stop cliffhangers.
We have now entered an episode of "House md" and Arlo is the guest star.

So - today's results - GOOD news. NO Liver Shunt.

Soooooooo

That's good right?

Enter next the conversation of what the medical experts think we do next.

Brain MRI and Spinal Tap!!!!!

At this point you could just go watch any Billy Crystal movie where he makes those comical perplexed face - and that is me and Melinda.

We are like - "how do we get from Liver to Brain"?

Well... Seems the drooling and the shaking can be caused by the Brain.
And, then there is the part where the Vet personally watched Arlo go off on a howl that no one could stop for a loooong time.

Question? "Ok.. so, is that a seizure"?
Answer " We just don't know"

Question? "Ok.. So, what are you thinking"?
As I am thinking...Now I gotta go and become an educated expert on THAT disease too?

Then Melinda and I launch into all the things that have happened medically with Arlo since the beginning and how they just don't add up. Maybe epilepsy - We could see that as a possibility. But, we filmed the shaking and the vet SAW the drooling. And, they are saying "No - they don't think we are looking at a seizure".

Answer: "Hydrocephalus" (Water on the Brain)

Eye yi yi ...

We tell him more .. and we seem to just be unwilling to accept this.

By the time we are done - he agrees that we can watch him closely for any of the symptoms.

Next stop ? We don't have a clue.

My thought is I will call our traveling vet (she is the one who nailed the cataracts at 11 weeks) and.. as she is visiting - there are no tests for her to have us do that will make her any money. She is ethical (not that the others are not)... But, at least with her we KNOW for sure that anything she tells us is for the interest of Arlo.

And.. we'll bring in the Behaviorist. So, the latest thought the specialist had today was.
MAYbe he got ahold of something.. and it made him sick and elevated his liver.
And, then he ALSO has this behavioral problem.. like - Autism (something we feel could slightly be true)...

This feels possible to us...

So - for now. For today .. we wait.

If anyone has any imput - we'd be happy to hear it.

You saw the video - he LOOKS happy. Right now - medically he seems ok.
But, the strange behavior outbursts are there for sure - my employee saw it and is now afraid of Arlo. Not that Arlo will hurt him .. rather that if he even looks at Arlo -that Arlo will "go off" on one of those howling fits. It is scary to be sure - if you were outside hearing this you'd think someone was beating the dog.

Sigh....

Leigh:

My goodness - GOOD news! :YAY :Clap Yet, so frustrating that you don't have an accurate diagnosis, I'm sure. Have you read any of Janet White's blogs on her dog Alvin? They're fascinating from a behavioral perspective.

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8305

Janet thinks Alvin might be autistic, or have those tendencies. Does Arlo exhibit any of the same behaviors as Alvin?

I'm so excited that he does NOT have a liver shunt as that sounded completely scary to me. He LOOKS wonderful, and if medical management keeps him high functioning like that, it would be hard to not keep him on it. He's completely beautiful and SO smart.

Kudos to you for doing all you can for him. Please keep us posted on his progress.

Wow! Good news on the shunt!
I was so hoping you would get answers today, and know what direction to take with Arlo's treatment plan.
I know you will continue to do whatever is needed to allow Arlo to be the happiest and healthiest that he can be!

Leigh,

Ever feel like your life has turned in to one long roller coaster ride? :bang

I loved that video of Arlo.. it shows what a fun, intelligent and lovable guy he is! (anyone care to explain why our dogs always want the end of the toy that we are holding? :gig )

As for his prognosis... whew! I'm very happy for you that it is not liver shunts.. but I sure wish you were able to get a proper diagnosis so that you can move on to treating the problem and being able to enjoy living life with Arlo!

Will you be able to get the eye surgery now or will it have to wait till you figure out what is going on with Arlo?

Arrrgghhh! I feel for you guys! Not knowing can feel worse than a bad diagnosis because at least you would know! ( i have been going through some health issues with my daughter so I can imaging how you must feel but at least she can tell me how she feels!) I will keep you all in my prayers and sending a hug to Arlo! :love

What is next...

Well - the Liver Shunt community (extremely helpful support group) votes against the Brain MRI and Spinal Tap. Because - hydrocephaly does not bring up the bile acid.

And... One can't possibly diagnose MVD without a liver biopsy. So, those guys are suggesting we keep with the medical management.

We'll ask our Vet to request a consult with the specialists in Tennessee as we need a Vet to agree on what course to take.
Meanwhile, he stays on medical mgt course - until the doctors agree - or, we run out of meds.
Or, we take him off the medical management - and if he presents the symptoms again - do the Liver biopsy.

:)

Eye Surgery
If truly no Liver issue we will do the surgery. But, the surgeon has to agree and he will be looking at blood work first to see if ok.

For now - that means wait and see. Keep an eye on him but treat him normal - and, we will bring back the behaviorist for some of the howling :)

Leigh,
Is it possible to do an electronic consult, possibly by live video?
Also, wondering if the medical manangement is disguising or hiding some of the issues, and therefore making the diagnosis difficult.

Still sending prayers for Arlo and your family as you work thru this.
As others have said, what a roller coaster ride this is!

Leigh,

Well, on one hand, I have to feel bad for you and Arlo. :cry But, on the other hand I have to commend you for doing ALL that you can for your Arlo. I am so happy to hear that he does not have a liver shunt, but the rest is worry some. I sure wish that you would have had your diagnosis in hand as of now.

Sadly, Arlo has been dealt some of the wrong cards in his short life. And, you are going to have to go along with him, protect him, love him and be the caring Mommy that you are. He is so lucky to have you. :nw

From what you are saying, it does appear that "watching him" for the time being is the best course of action. But, I also know that you will be delving into these possible problems to get a greater understanding. I have to agree with Marianne, in that after a period of time and if you still have no answers, I would consider removing the medical management to see what will happen. This is your choice, of course. Personally, I would be reluctant to change anything as long as he is acting as he was in that last video. :Clap

I have had something on my mind for a while now. I have been reluctant to tell you because this is really not my business. But, I will tread ahead. So, here it is. You stated that Arlo has been "officially" declared a “lemon”. I don't know if you were kidding or not. But, if this is true, I would go after the breeder for funds to help you with your Veterinary bills. I know that you are happily bearing these costs yourself, as long as you can help Arlo. But, maybe this breeder should get a taste for what they have done to Arlo. However, I have to realize that this might not be their fault. Something is telling me that these troubles could be hereditary, due to a lack of proper breeding techniques. :dk I know, this is very hard for me to believe. Arlo is such a handsome, beautiful, smart, endearing and cute little pup! I just love him! :luv

Dawn :paw :hp

Gah! So much for the poor boy. I'm so glad he doesn't have liver shunts but the high enzyme and bile levels are frightful. I've had good results with liver support factors and Dr. Dodds liver detox diet for awhile. Even if it's not his liver, the LSF's are great for pre and post surgery to move out the drugs. I'm hoping you get some answers soon for everyone's sake.

Hi All..

Much happened today- all good.

Turns out - the Vet (primary) agreed that Arlo needs to stay on the medical management.

This is because MVD is actually very often treated because of the symptoms with a liver biopsy never being done.

Also - Arlo will have a consultation with a Veterinary Behaviorist. This will be done rather than these invasive tests.

The Eyes:
We'll wait as long as possible. Could be weeks or few months. Hopefully the eye surgeon will be able to do both eyes as once.
He can do the first eye - and then if all going well while he is under - they go ahead and do the other eye.

Meanwhile.. Arlo continues to be feeling good with the treatment. He is so sweet and tonight he got up next to me on the sofa.
I put my hand on him and he settled in and let out this long sigh. As if to say he knew he was in a safe place next to his mommie :)

About Arlo being a lemon:
Bless him - while we joke about his new middle name being Citron. It is true that the Vet literally said he was "by law" considered a lemon. That would mean we were entitled to 150% of what we paid. I contacted the breeder and she DID refund us (she did so last week) 100% of what we paid - but not 150%. While technically (according to the lemon law) we are entitled to the 150% - we were grateful for what she did refund.

This recent medical problem with the Liver really is pretty rare in Cockers - and not something we feel the breeder is responsible for.

The cataracts are another story. :)

ps - When our vet enters the room to see Arlo she always goes down to the floor. Today Arlo ran over to her and he gave her KISSES !!
With all these Vet visits he just thinks these are his pals. It was SO sweet

Arlo sounds like such a sweet puppy and I'm so sorry that he has endured so much (you too).
I was wondering if it is safe to have cataract surgery on both eyes at one time? I know that the opthomologist would only do one eye at a time on my mom. Perhaps they need to adjust and rest properly because they can detach their retinas.

About doing both eyes at once. Thanks for your question about the possible detached retina.

That is one reason we wanted to do one at a time - and, also why we'll follow the lead of the surgeon.
He is an excellent doctor and we kinda feel his advise would be best.

I have heard from others here on the forum that doing two at the same time was no problem.

Our main reason is to try to not put Arlo through surgery two times for the Liver.

Once we meet again with Dr Chang (eye doctor) I'll post again.

:)

Good News about Arlo is always wonderful to hear. He sounds like a very loving little guy.

The fact his breeder returned 100% of what you paid would be enough for me, if Arlo was mine. I agree the liver probably is not a problem with her breeding program. Cataracts can also appear suddenly in a line. Hopefully, she has stopped the line so not to continue the eye probs, or so I've heard.

I agree that the 100% was ok.

I have always felt that the breeder was not wholly indifferent to her dogs. She seemed to want to make sure they were healthy and for sure the environment was a loving one. We felt the puppies were in a home with her grandkids and the family for socialization.

And, it was OUR responsibility to look into and learn about a breeders lines.

For sure Arlo's breeder is not a "back yard" breeder - she has shown for some time and Alro comes from Champion lines.

That said - she does NO testing. Again, our fault. Would I buy from this breeder again - No.
But, mostly because once we left she wanted ZERO to do with us and expressed no interest in Arlo.
My guess is she only knows about the outcome of her puppies if the buyer tells her.
Do I think she'd breed the dogs again? I wonder.

I've met some breeders on this forum who have been at this for many years and have sage advise. After talking with them I've learned much more.

:)

Hi Leigh: It's always so good to hear good news about Arlo. He is just the CUTEST little guy, and his personality, even with all of his medical issues, seems good, if not great, to me. He's still such a puppy and he's not "done" yet, you know? I have a 2 y/o who is rotten to the core, LOL. And I love her to pieces. Please keep posting and letting us know about Arlo. He is definitely a forum favorite.

Ok..

So.. One of the side effects of MVD is that when there is too much protein in the blood.
It causes toxins in the brain.

Keeping his toxins out of his brain is an art and we are still learning how to perfect his food and meds.

When the toxins get high... Arlo gets CRANKY or prone to howling outbursts (without) provocation.

Today we provoked :) He is moderately cranky these past few days - but doing ok otherwise.

This is Melinda and me (blonde) and Arlo helping out as we sing Happy Birthday for a co-worker.

Just a thought :dk after watching/listening to the video......could he be hearing things that trigger the howling (even when you don't hear anything)?
