Leigh,

LOL! I like this one the best! :neen But, I have to be careful when and where I use it! :wk

I am so glad that little Arlo is doing so well. In the house and health wise. Any report on his howling and his diet? Since you have not mentioned this for a while, I was thinking that all is much better! :hp

Dawn :paw

Before the forum crashed, we had a lot more icons to choose from. I liked that much better. Sometimes it is hard to choose! :ROFL

Actually, this is why I like this icon :bang best - because that IS life with little lovely Arlo.

First - Today (well it's after midnight - so yesterday) when we went for our daily coffee outing - he howled so bad that a stranger tried to help him and then thought better of it when Arlo began to howl MORE. LOL - I am laughing just recalling that poor guys face.

Then tonight someone came by to pick up a new painting Melinda just sold :joy
And, the ENTIRE time the guy was here picking it up Arlo was a MONSTER...
We give him so much attention and he is the center of our world.. So we think he was jealous.

He kept looking up at poor Melinda and he'd bark like - WHAT about ME?

Then the guy left and Arlo ran up and down the hallway (I'll have to film it sometime) and demanded that we throw the ball forEVER... He did not wind down.

These kinds of days happen when he's had a little too much protein. He gets maniacal. :run

Hi Leigh,

:bang OK, I will use it too! :neen

Well, at least you know why he gets Manic! I know that you don't really need another job where it comes to Arlo, but do you keep a log of what he eats each day? Maybe, you would be able to discover what is giving him the high protein reactions.

He is such a little doll, it is hard that think that he has any faults. :love

Dawn :hp

Leigh-
Well thank you! I love our family's yard, it's a great place to hide out in, and the boys love exploring. When we got this house the yard was completely dirt, since it was a new house, the only thing in that yard was thousands of rusted nails. It's really become beautiful. We have a fire pit (if you see pictures with a tan background, it was on the concrete benches near the pit) an eating area, sunken seating, the lawn with an olive tree, a veggie garden, a pool (which the boys are scared of :gig ) and finally a dog run for when they need to be locked up. It's a pretty fabulous yard, but I had nothing to do with it, that was all the parent's call. :wk Your yard was absolutely gorgeous! Did you design it yourself? Also, I've seen pictures of your new city yard, and I love your planters on the fence! I hope Arlo's been doing well. I love that little guy's heavily ticked face, so cute! :hp
Dawn- You got me hooked on emoticons too! All your fault! :neen

Emma

I designed the pool and outdoor shower - also the cabana.
And, I designed the landscaping along with the actual landscaper (Joe) who made the proposal based on my wishes and he then did the work.

The pathway was all his idea... Which I love as it goes through our "orchard" of 6 citrus trees.
And, next to it a cactus garden.

The putting green was my idea :)

In the end we made a great team... My guess is Joe would tell you he moved my choices in the direction he wanted and let me think it was all me.

We not only keep a log. But, made a custom little notebook that we log all meds, meals and poopies into.
This is how I know he is maniacal from food. The idea is to give as MUCH protein as possible without it being too much. It is a slippery slope.

Our friend has chickens that will live their whole live - loved and cared for wonderfully. They are grass fed along with other greens and vitamins. So... We use these. The taste is SO much better. He actually makes this little noise because he has to wait for the meal to cool down - which is brown rice, egg, carrots.
Kinda like .. "mmmmrufff" "mmmmruff" - muffled.... Very cute.

I just can't imagine what kind of human parents we'd be.
We are a mix of being strict and spoiling - all at once.

We never realized how much we'd enjoy parenting.

Arlo you are adorable!

I just got back from vacation and had to read up on all your adventures. I loved your agility video! Your doing awesome! I'm sorry to read about your cherry eye. You know when you rub your eye the wrong way you can get it too? I'm glad your Mommy was able to massage it back in for you! I was wondering ... when you get so crazy is your Mommy able to distract you or do you just ignore her and keep barking? Do you think teaching you to touch a target would satisfy your need for attention and still allow her to conduct business? Just wondering....

Dear Lisa R

My mom told me that we are going to do the "touch" training. Since my bad day - and night I have been very good.
I think it is because mom did good with the food this week. Also, she started giving me WATERMELON - I love it so much.

I sit very patient until it is my bite. Mom gets hers first - I am not sure why - but I think Mom thinks she is the pack leader.
I don't want to hurt her feelings so most days I let on like she really is. Now, Melinda is another story.
I try to push her around every chance I get.. which unfortunately -I think even she is catching on.
Lately, I am getting the picture that I might be number 3 in this pack. Then it is Diablo, Winston and Xander - Poor Xander ...
He is definitely bottom kitty pack member.

My Cherry eye has not happened again since the day my mom massaged it back in. The doctor looked and said Mom did it perfect.
Tomorrow I see the groomer - so we'll see if it happens again. Last time it happened I was getting my hair done.

Here is a link to a video Mom took of me the day I saw the Vet for my Cherry eye.
Those guys are my friends now. You'll notice my waggy tail in the beginning of the video.

In our home we call this "progress".
Arlo was able to behave and be next to Diablo long enough for us to take this photo.
Seconds later Diablo was smacking him in the face telling him to get the "F" off his territory.

Love this picture!

Arlo is saying "Look at me, Diablo loves me!"
And Diablo is saying " What the heck, who do you think you are!"

Sibling love!

Just another walk in the Urban landscape.

Arlo next to alley art.

If you look closely you see Arlo's RED eye. Yes... once again. Arlo now has something else we never heard of.
"Blepharitis".

http://www.gopetsamerica.com/dog-health ... blems.aspx
(Blepharitis) is about half way down.

When I saw the photo (Melinda took it)...

I enlarged it and looked closely at Arlo's eye and little face. He was so yearning and sweet.
It actually made me cry (that is one of the side effects of art - in this case photography)...

I saw his face and the skeleton and thought of how we often feel we are keeping the grim reaper at bay for our little boy.
I already knew I love Arlo - but in that moment I realized just how much.

xo

Hi Leigh,

You know, poor little Arlo and you. :roll I know about Blepharitis as I also have it. Because of this condition, I don't wear eye makeup unless absolutely necessary and for social events.

I don't know if this will help you and Arlo, but I treat my Blepharitis with Erythromycin Ointment and I wash my eye lids with a mixture or 1/2 Baby Shampoo and 1/2 water. I use a Q-tip, but you could use a cotton swab so it won't stick him in the eye. Of course, I know that you would check with Arlo's Vet first.

Poor little baby! :roll

Dawn :hp

If you are interested in the Human feeling of having Blepharitis, I would be willing to expand. I did not want to take up Arlo's thread with my eye problems. :wk

Thanks for the posts.

We DO have some good news however...
You might think little Arlo's hair on the top of his head is that way because we LIKE it.

Umm No. It has been that way because NO one here (can you believe a city like LA has no one) can give him a proper Cocker cut.

When we took him for his first adult cut he came out looking like a POODLE head.

The GOOD news is.. Julie helped us find a groomer down here (thanks Julie!) and I love her work.
On Monday Sept 17 Arlo will be going to her. She prepared me for it not to be perfect yet because we have to first deal with the bad hair issues. But she felt that in a few months time he'll start to grown into an nice crown. (it is too short in some area's now and too long in others).

Here is the funny part - we are literally going to be taking him to .
Rancho Cucamonga !!

Isn't that too funny - remember all the Bob Hope jokes on about Rancho Cucamonga.

So, now we say "Arlo has to go all the way to Rancho Cucamonga just to get a hair cut"..
Special boy.

Wow! No I did not know Humans had this problem too. I am sorry to hear this.

We got a little sad that the problem does not always "go away".
And, may be a life long problem. Sounds like from your case that you have to always protect from an attack.

Arlo sees the eye specialist soon to follow up on the vision left in his right eye. We are waiting for it to have less vision so we can do the surgery on both eyes at the same time. So, I am hopeful that we learn more then. I'll also check on the meds we have to be sure we are doing all we can.

:)

Hi Leigh,

Yes, it is a life long problem for me. But, I can keep it under control. Especially, when I start to feel my eyelids itch. Putting on eye liner and mascara obviously exasperated the condition, so I always clean the make-up off and put the Erythromycin on for the night.

Of course Arlo can not tell you when his eyes are bothering him, so your course of action will have to be much different. I don't remember my eye becoming red like Arlo's. But, this is probably because my eyes bothered me and I went to see the eye doctor right away. Arlo just can't tell you. UGH!

I do have one question. After surgery is Arlo expected to regaining sight in both eyes? I guess I got lost in that regard.

Poor baby Arlo. :roll But, he does have the two greatest doggie Mommies in the world. And, I bet that you will make a nice day for yourselves and Arlo on grooming day. I for see another doggie permitted lunch date. :gig

Arlo now has more meds for the eye. Hoping for good results.

The Vet wants to retest the Liver now that he has been on medical mgt for a while and we'll hope for the tests to be at least not worse :)

Meanwhile.. both Melinda and I think Arlo has had a shift for the positive. Could it be his age ? - Now 11 months old.. he just has seemed easier but also SWEETER.

It is amazing how much love we feel for this guy.

Meanwhile.. other good news. Arlo has been going through his coat change.
Melinda and I both would tell each other "it's your turn - I got all the mats out".
So, I came up with the idea of - "I'll take the LEFT side - and Melinda - you take the RIGHT side"... WELL .. It worked out GREAT! We delight in telling the other one .. MY side is knot free... and then pointing out a big knot on the other's side.

This has resulted in two things.
One - we both do our jobs and Two - Arlo has a perfect mat free coat.

Today the groomer (the one who does our Cats and comes to the house) - who we LOVE ..(she does not do any coat trimming)... said it took 1 and 1/2 hours to do his brush out PRIOR to bathing. Now this is WITH Melinda and I doing our "perfect job' just prior to handing him off to her.

This is how MUCH that baby coat is haunting us.

So the next question is - how long with this last? This coat change over.

It lasts about 6-8 weeks. Your groomer is wasting time brushing prior to bathing. It would be much more time efficient if she washed conditioned and brushed while blow drying (assuming she has a stand dryer or at least a hose holder. Then the whole thing would only take a little over the time she took brushing as it's much easier to get mats out when they are clean, conditioned and wet.

Keeping my fingers crossed for a good result on his liver tests.

Thanks for the info Julie.

I will let the groomer know for the next time. Also, by then we should have the conditioner.
And, in 10 days Arlo visits his new groomer!!!

So if the change over is 6 to 8 weeks - I think it has been about 2 weeks....
6 to go :)

Hanging in there..

Leigh and :Parti

PS -Yowza .. We just had our 2nd earthquake here in LA in just 5 days.
It was in Beverly Hills - just a a few miles away. NOT liking this at all.

Arlo eye update:

We saw the eye surgeon today to determine when to get surgery.

First
- Arlo's left eye (the blind one- with full cataract ) is showing some "issues" with possible protein leakage.
This means we can't wait for the right eye to get as blind as the left eye.

The right eye is only in the beginning stages - and has not gotten worse since last visit.

So - we now get his Liver Enzymes tested again and provided not worse .. He'll get the left eye surgery.

The recent issue with his right eye did not seem to give the eye specialist any concerns and he felt the eye itself looked good and the issue is with the tissue in the corner being red and inflamed - but not the eye itself.

Funny - this little guy had better not get that left eye fixed and then have sudden full vision loss in the right eye in weeks like he did the other one. We are just shaking our heads over here at least once a week.

The latest. We have a house guest who got up this morning and opened his door. Arlo RAN into the room - jumped up on the bed and had a FULL pee. Now in all the time we've had him he only did something like this one other time - he got up and peed on the sofa RIGHT next to me.

Then today - when I picked him up at the vet - he leaned forward in his squat and had a FULL pee on the floor. Again - odd.

Suddenly I recalled - BOTH times he was on oral steroids. I am thinking we add this to the "side effects list"...

Arlo says :Parti :angel
