I didn't want to add to the sticky post since it's getting long and my question may have gotten lost at the bottom.

For those of you who have dogs with back issues, how do you integrate them back into a regular lifestyle after surgery and/or a course of meds and crate rest? I don't want Zoe tied to her condo forever, but she is SUCH a spitfire and I'm reluctant to let her have free roam of the house without supervision. She's already had two back surgeries and is about done with her meds from this last episode which did not require surgery. I am at home most of the day, but it's not as if I keep an eye on them all the time.

Any suggestions or experiences that work for you are greatly appreciated.

Hi Susan,
My Zoey is going thru the same thing! She is weaning off prednisone and crate rest. We are letting her roam around when we are home and not busy. If we go out and at bed time its back to jail for Zoey. She doesn't like it but tolerates it. She will lay down and be quiet as long as we are... if I go to the kitchen ,bathroom anywhere realy she follows me......
Good luck!

I think I would give the vet a call. S/he would know best what your Zoe needs.

Thanks for the suggestion, Debbie. My vet has been excellent in her medical advice through two surgeries and two courses of medical treatment; however, this is not a medical question. It's a support/coping question which my vet can't address since her dogs don't have back disease.

Zoey had a quick vet check today. She is doing great! She said to just take it slow and to keep her from running and jumping. The hard part is jumping as Zoey loves to get on the couch and bed to cuddle. We only have Zoey though no other dogs for her to wrestle with. I would just do your best to keep her quiet if you can't watch her then back to jail she goes.

Thanks, Becky. I guess tethering/crate time/carrying down the stairs is in our future.

Honestly, since this can happen doing nothing, I think life should go on as usual. Of course you're not going to put her in a circus, and carrying up and down stairs is a good idea, but otherwise let her enjoy life.

Its not restricted for ever......just slowly incorporating back to family life. I just don't want her to reinjure herself when she is just doing well.
