About a year ago I noticed a hard whitish bump in the vertical ear canal of my 7 yr. old Cocker, Rocky. I took him to the vet who looked at it and told me that it looked like a wart and wasn't anything to worry about.

Fast forward to this year....I had groomed Rocky and was cutting the hair inside his ears and noticed another bump, similar to the first one. It was higher up in the ear canal. I took Rocky back to the vet (a different vet in the same practice) who said that it looked like a wart and again, it wasn't anything to worry about.

Being the worrier that I am, I told the vet I would like to have them removed. So...Mon. morning she will sedate him and take a small scalpel and cut them off and send them off to see what kind of bumps they are.

Rocky has had problems with his ears from time to time, and I take him to the vet every 3 months for an ear flushing. He is not a stranger to ear problems!

Has anyone had any similar experiences? They bumps are hard and are only about 2 mm in size. They are both dome shaped. They don't seem to bother Rocky and don't bleed nor seem to be fast growing.

They probably are warts. My cocker had warts, although not in the ear canal, hers also got to a point of bleeding. I had some of them removed, but the vet didn't want me to make a pincusion out of her. She had a lot. Don't be alarmed, many of them come back. I would only remove them if you were having your cocker put under anesthesia for something else (teeth cleaning) or a local anesthetic for removal of the warts. I wouldn't make it a special knock out.

Terri,
Thanks for your reply. (Your Cocker is beautiful!)
I agree - I wouldn't have him put under with anesthesia just for what are probably warts. The vet is going to give him a sedative that she said would make him feel like a person feels when he goes to the dentist and takes nitrous oxide. She will also numb the area.
Will let you know how it goes.
Thanks again for your post. It helps to "talk" to others who have Cockers.

Mindy

Update of Rocky:
Got the test results: One of the growths was a "non-neoplastic lesion" - benign - and the other growth was a tumor called a ceruminous adenoma. The vet said this had the possibility of being malignant if left alone. The lab results said that the margins were free of any bad cells.
So glad these have been removed and Rocky is OK!!

Yes, I was so relieved. I would rather find out early what something is and deal with and not wait until things have progressed. I've had skin cancer several times and no how important it is to have everything checked out when they first appear.
Since finding the 2 ear growths, I had gotten out the clippers and cut Rocky's hair, only to find 2 growths on his backside to the left of his tail. One is very small, like it's just beginning, the other is moveable and feels like a sebaceous cyst. I've had several removed from my scalp so am familiar with how they feel. I've been doing lots of reading and learned that Cockers are prone to them. To make a long story short, I took Rocky back to the vet and asked them to aspirate them. The vet said they were too small and too firm and that she would have to do a punch biopsy to get cells. I told her to just remove them. So....under sedation (again) they were removed today. He had to have a couple of stitches. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but as you said, better safe than sorry.

You're a good dog mom...that's all,not paranoid. I bet those are nothing but cysts. I'll cross my fingers for cysts. My non cocker had one and it popped...eeeekkk. It was hard...like a wart even looked like nothing more than a wart. A friend of mine has a cocker with 2 of them as well.

Wonderful news! The vet just called me and said that the 2nd set of growths taken from Rocky's backside were benign cysts. Even though I suspected they were cysts, it's good to find out for sure! So relieved........
