Hi all! We've been having some issues with Maddie for the past few months, and I'm curious if you all have any theories about what could be going on.

First off, she has bad hips that pop, so we have her on joint supplements and have been recently really trying to limit her jumping on and off the sofa. She also has the most adorable crooked legs. :) Second, she seems to have allergies. I haven't had her tested (although I'm thinking I need to), but she's been getting more eye "gunk" lately and keeps yeast infections in her ears a lot. It's also not uncommon for her to lick or chew her paws. She eats Orijen, and I'm pretty careful with the treats I give her, so my best guess is that she's allergic to the grass, because it seems to worsen any time we trim the lawn. She also has to have her anal glands expressed every few months, and every time I take her to have it done, they always say the glands were full, so I'm starting to wonder if I need to have it done more often. AND, another random factor to throw in is that a couple months ago, she had a tick. We live in Florida, so tick-borne illnesses are much rarer around here, but in the backs of our minds, my husband and I have been worried about Lyme disease (we just got the test done for that today to be on the safe side).

So those are pretty much all of the factors I can think of that might be causing this situation...

A few months ago, Maddie started limping on her front leg. I freaked because this happened two days after finding a tick on her (even though I know that's not a long enough incubation period), but we gave her a round of Rimadyl and kept her from excessive jumping, and she seemed to get much better. Then about two (maybe three) weeks ago, she started acting not quite like herself. Somewhat reluctant to jump up on things, apparent stiffness in her hips, etc. I put her on another round of Rimadyl because we'd had some house guests who'd played rough with her (thinking she was healed up at that point), and I thought that maybe she'd had a flare up from that. The medicine helped somewhat, but didn't take care of the problem. That's when I decided to have the tick panel run, just to be safe, and I'm waiting for the results. They also expressed her anal glands today at the vet, and I've noticed a lot less licking and chewing of her hips/anus. Previously I'd wondered if she was chewing because of the glands or because of pain in her hips. So hard to tell, you know?

Anyway, I'm sorry to ramble with so many alternatives, but just wanted to give you all as much information to go off of as I could think of. At this point, I'm thinking it's probably either 1) just legitimate joint stiffness, maybe even arthritis in her hips 2) allergy-induced anal gland irritation that's been bugging her, or 3) Lyme disease. I know Lyme disease sounds crazy, but she has many of the symptoms.

I'd love to her any thoughts, theories, or advice you all have... you're such a knowledgable bunch! Thanks!

Ashley

With so many issues going on, I would seek the advice of your vet.

My vet once told me "ears and rears" go together in terms on irritation. Max doesn't have the ear issues because of hyper-diligence with Zymox and diet on our part. He does get his glands expressed monthly. The vet does it when they trim his drag queen nails. Neither job is one I want so we gladly pay for it. I don't have good advice for the hips except to "get thee to the vet" and then to the ortho specialist if you need to. If the glands aren't infected and the expressions aren't weird, just full, you might add fiber to see if you can firm up stools and express them more naturally.

Thanks for the help, Ashley! I'm hoping to hear back about the Lyme disease test either today or tomorrow, and then if that comes back negative, our vet offers laser treatments that I'm planning to use if it does indeed end up being a joint/hip issue. She seems MUCH better today, so I'm really hoping that maybe it was just caused by discomfort with her glands.

I have the vet trim her nails and express her glands, too! I tried to trim her nails once and cut to far up, and she hasn't let me forget it! Ha! Well worth the money, I agree!

I'm going to have to try the pumpkin suggestion. Thanks for that!

Does Zymox have any side effects? Her allergies worsen whenever spring comes or whenever the grass (weeds! ha!) needs cutting, then lessen in fall/winter, and we're very careful about chemicals around the house, so I'm fairly sure any issues she has are grass related. Is Zymox something I could give her seasonally? I may talk to my vet about that. He briefly mentioned that the yeast infections in her ears could be allergy-related but didn't get into details about medications (probably because her infections have never gotten that bad, just persistent). I'd prefer to prevent them rather than constantly "curing" them, if possible.

Thanks for reading through my super long description of her situation! :) I know I listed A LOT of factors, but I was just trying to think of anything and everything that might be contributing to her discomfort. I knew you guys would have good suggestions. She's going to be EXCITED about the pumpkin. How much do you give your dog? About a tablespoon?

Ashley

Zymox is a liquid for the ears. My vet recommends it for Abby instead of cleaner since she tends to be a bit of a yeasty girl with beyond hairy ears :dk . BUT what I do is use Zymox then 3 days later use cleaner...repeat. Gawd, she hates it!!! It seems to be working for her, knock on wood

You can google the zymox for the best price. We use the one with hydrocortisone.

Thanks Debbie, I wasn't clear. Zymox is an enzymatic ear treatment. Max gets benedryl daily but he seems allergic to life. His are not seasonal, per se.

I see... thanks ladies! Maddie has really hairy ears too. It's amazing how well Schroeder's ears do and how prone Maddie's are to infection. She's doing MUCH better today, so I'm really hoping the discomfort was just from her glands needing to be expressed. Fingers crossed!

Benadryl doesn't do a thing for Zoey. We use generic zyrtec. Once a day.
