My one and a half year old Smokey is not drinking enough water these days. I have noticed that in the last two days he has been drinking less than 6 ounces per day, which is way below his usual amount (at least 8.5 ounces per day). I don't know what caused this drastic change but he seems okay. Should I be worried? How do I get him to drink enough water? Please help.

Hmm... what does he eat? maybe he's getting all the liquid he needs in the winter from his food?

I've noticed that my dogs are drinking about 25% less in the winter, even though they are eating more.

Funny, but my Jennie seemed to be drinking more water this winter. I put it down to having forced air heat in the new house, whereas we had electric wall heat in the old one. I put a portable humidifier on each floor but it didn't seem to change her water use.

She has always 'sneaked' drinks of outside water whenever possible. I had put her wading pool upside down in the back yard and have caught her drinking rainwater from the underside of the lip, from the catch basin beneath an outside plant pot and even from a depression on top of a rock. That was all either dried up or frozen for most of December and the first half of January, so she had no choice but to drink from her water bowl. The last few weeks have been above freezing and her inside water use is back to normal. I'm pretty sure she is once again enjoying 'fresh' outside water.

I use a water dish with a filter and I only add filtered water from the fridge to that bowl. She prefers drinking from the 'stream' rather than from the 'pool', so you might consider trying one to see if your Smokey would prefer moving water as well.

I use the Pioneer Pet Raindrop fountain. It is stainless steel and easy to clean.
