I am interested in getting a complete thyroid panel done for Cici. She is not ill, but it has never been done, and if there are any minor signs of potential issues, I want to tackle them now. She will be 7 next year, so it might be good to have it done for my middle-aged love bug.

I have read about Dr. Dodd's test on this forum.

Is this highly recommended as compared to a thyroid panel done by your vet?

Also, there's the cost. In your experience, is the panel done by Dr. Dodd relatively cheaper compared to going to your vet? I am just curious. On the website, it says $175 and somehow I doubt my vet would be cheaper.
I read one post on another forum saying it is more cost effective, but I have not called my vet to ask about their rate yet.

As a first-time cocker mom, any thoughts and your experience on this would be much appreciated.

The difference between Dr. Dodd's lab and other labs is that Dr. Dodd's lab is norm-referenced by breed. When bloodwork is sent to other labs they use a general norm reference which often times is not accurate for cockers. Dr. Dodd is able to give an accurate result for cockers because of her personal research and interest in thyroid issues.

Vet says to get a complete picture, we should do blood work here first, which will include thyroid. Then once we get results on that, we can decide whether to move forward on shipping Cici's blood to Dr. Dodd's lab.

They drew her blood today - waiting for the results. My inclination would be to go ahead and do Dr. Dodd's thyroid test even if everything looks good on the blood test.

Or is that totally unnecessary if the blood work is great? What do you think?

Email Dr. Dodds and ask her-- she's really nice.

Cici's blood test came back looking great.

I emailed Dr. Dodds and here is what she said:

A simple blood panel typically only contains a total T4 reading. Because this breed commonly has thyroiditis, she needs Hemopet’s Thyroid Profile 5 or the equivalent panel at MSU with my review of the results.

So, I will go ahead and do the full test.

The 5 point test actually includes CBC blood work. We did it about a month ago. If you want to see what a report looks like you can PM me. Hemopet is also a cheap option for rabies titers and distemper/parvo if your vet doesn't do vacci-check.
