Might be a dumb question but would the solution work without the iodine? One of my dogs has a white ear and face and I did not want to get it stained with the iodine. Would appreciate any input. Thanks.

Hi Marcia:

Mr. Google tells me there is a "decolorized" iodine available on Amazon (and probably elsewhere). You might want to read up on it and see if it works the same as the red.

Let us know, ok?

Tina

Tina. I went and read the reviews on the white iodine. Two things that caught my eyes are: it has ammonia and not advisable to use on the skin. So it is probably not a good option. But thank you for trying.

I don't think you need to worry about the ice tea color on the dog. If using the cleaner I don't fill up the ear canal with the fluid, but we really don't have a serious ear problem. No color change on my light color buff. We use it about every six months and then it's not bad. All dogs are different. To me it's diet. Even vets think so.

Can't really tell you if this is really true or not, but they advertise Farnums 10% povidine iodine as non staining for pets. This is specifically made for animals and is much more pricey than what you can buy in Walmart for human use :dk You might want to call them and ask. As far as the regular povidine it says you can use the hydrogen peroxide to take staining out. When I do Snickie's ears I put the solution in,squish it around, and she is very good about this, I have a paper towel handy, tilt her head and let most of it to drain in the paper towel, wipe her ears out as much as possible with the towel, and then let her shake out anything that might be left, which I can tell you is very minute.
Actually you can make the solution without it, usually when you buy just the regular ear cleaner from the vet it just has the alcohol, boric acid, and vinegar. That's what it is, an ear cleaner, and nothing else. The povodine is an extra ingredient to help for an infection, and also as anti-fungal. Don't know how often you clean the dog's ears, but maybe every other time or every two times use it with the povidine.

To give you a little laugh my previous dog was a parti and one night at about 10 P.M. I let her out to potty, she came back in getting sprayed by a skunk. I had read once about tomato juice as a remedy, well it really isn't and my dog was "pink colored" for many washing's :lol3

Marcia, you might want to use the K9 Liquid Health Ear Solution. I buy it on Amazon; that's what I use for Cricket, who also has white inside her ears. I've found that I don't need to fill the canals to overflowing, and I put a cotton ball into her ear right away, so we don't get ear solution running down her face and neck. And the liquid health solution has a purple tinge, but fades very quickly on a white dog. It's nearly the same formula and works just as well.
