Oliver sits by my chair and begs when I'm drinking ice water—he wants that ice! I don't mind sharing, but I've heard I should try to keep it in moderation because he could crack a tooth.

Can someone explain something to me? Plenty of people feed their animals raw/BARF diets, and the dogs are munching on BONE. I'm guilty of snacking on an ice cube here or there myself, but I certainly don't have the teeth to chomp down on bones, so why are his much more powerful teeth in danger?

If a dog can deal with a bone, why can't they eat ice safely? Any thoughts?

That's a great question. Unfortunately I have no answer - but I'm interested in what other people have to say. I think chicken bones, even raw ones, are not all that hard because there's marrow in them. Ice is solid. That's the only thing I can think of, but I have no idea if it even makes sense. :dk

For both humans and dogs, I am told that crushing an ice cube can possibly cause damage or cracks to the enamel, leading to sensitivity and pain. Crushed ice might be a bit safer since lesser pressure is required to cut through it. You would think a bone would do that, too, but I don't know....

First time I put ice cubes in Cici's water on a hot day, her nose touched the ice and she looked at me like I was nuts. She likes cold water now, though. She looks at the fridge with a demanding expression.

My son was getting the crush ice out of his soda going to give his ice to Jenny as she had nothing but put her tongue his soda. I wasn't there don't recall if he drank that soda knowing him he wouldn't, do recall she had his crushed ice though. Try the cold water.

I give my girls ice. They run to the freezer every time I open it.

Yeah I've heard about the ice cubes too and dogs teeth, I don't give Snickie ice cubes, but I give her "ice water",which she loves. I keep a plastic bottle half filled with ice, when I want to give her a treat of ice water, I take it out of the freezer and fill it with water, swirl it for about 30 seconds and icy cold water, she loves it. When I say, want some icy water, she comes running. I do give her a raw beef rib bone once a week and like you I don't see the difference between a bone and ice. Dogs have been chewing on bones for thousands of years.
Debbie your dogs may come running when you go to the freezer, but my niece has two boxers with the automatic ice dispenser, and these dogs help themselves to ice all day long! Be thankful these guys are small.

Denise, that's funny. I can picture those dogs doing that. I'm sure she comes home to a puddle, in front of the fridge daily.

The ice my girls get are quarter moon shape....not really big.
