I have a Cocker, but my daughter just rescued a Springer Spaniel age 7. The dog had never been spayed, so it was the first thing my daughter had done, after the initial vet check and tests were run. Now, 14 days after her surgery, the dog has seriously started nursing on a blanket. Is this a sign of stress and anxiety? Hormone changes? She has not done this for 7 years, and it seems like a radical thing for a senior dog to start. Any suggestions?

I have a year and a half intact female that has always "nursed" her puppy layette pillow that I brought her home with. She finds a place on it and suckles. She even kneads her paws much like a cat when she does this. When her "ninny" went missing in the bottom of the toy box, she began the same suckling routine with a soft plush toy. But then again, Lyric has had this behavior from 8 weeks on and it seems to be a self comforting behavior. I would wonder why an adult dog would begin this out of the blue? Maybe she has always done this when under some sort of stress?
