All the way up, from where your pattern on the back ends. When I do a no skirt, no chest, like I did on Kyra, I take the front legs down all the way to the elbow, and I take the hip down slightly farther than I normally would on a cocker pattern. the with the comb or longer blade everything else comes off the legs.

I did a clip on legs here, all 8 of them. I think they look pretty darn good for an dummy. Without the video I'm sure I would have had the disaster I had almost 3 yrs ago with Abby..bless her little heart. Before this I only scissored and scissored very little. I think I did a better job than the one I paid for last time

Thank you, Julie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Julie, you're a saint to answer all these questions and post such helpful videos! But...I have a question....
Penny's absolutely panicked by the clippers, so I've been just scissoring her. She's an angel for that, and it's pretty OK because she has a field coat and I'm happy with her looking sort of curly and tousled. But it's hard to get the legs smooth with scissors - I always seem to gouge someplace or give her "ridges." And it's hopeless to get her face adequately trimmed. This weekend I gave the clippers another shot for her face, and I thought she'd have a heart attack. I hope this is a temporary situation, because she's getting so much braver....

What kind of clippers are you using? The Andis clippers are very loud compared to the Wahl trimmers and the later may be a better choice for her. I would never make suggestions on what to do with her as you are the guru for bringing scared dogs around :nw but since it's my job to groom dogs whether they are frightened or not, I usually will just run the clipper by them and on them without actually clipping them. Start around the butt and work my way up. Having background noise helps too, like a vacuum running in the distance. You might also try a happy hoodie with her. http://www.happyhoodie.com/

As far as making gouges, the trick to that is to always hold your scissors perpendicular to what your cutting.

Thank you, Julie! I do have Andis clippers. I'm not sure quieter ones would completely do the trick, since she seems to be especially freaked out by the buzzy sensation when they touch her. I'll work on desensitization, showing her the clippers as you suggest - and keep scissoring for awhile - actually, your hints about brushing might help with that as well. I really appreciate your videos - they're very helpful to me! And thank you for the compliment on my work with the shy ones. It's so rewarding when they really start to get it!

Ditto on the "missing Julie" comments. She used to post on the "gotta love cockers" forum, but that one appears to have shut down. I think I'd still be paying a groomer if it wasn't for all of Julie's instructions, tips, and videos!

Me too. She was so kind to answer all my dumb questions and always went the extra mile posting the videos and advices to help people like me who knew nothing about grooming. Great loss!
