New to the cocker world! I'm wondering when they best time to start getting them groomed would be? I know they have ear issues, so obviously ASAP on that bathing and cleaning of the ears, but what about the actually cutting of hair? I kinda enjoy her fluffy puppy look!

Hi Julia!

Your puppy is adorable! What's her name?

I'm new too. My Jennie is 14 weeks old. The breeder groomed her for me the day I brought her home at 8 weeks. She still has the fluffy puppy fur on her legs and sides but is clipped on the face, top of ears, neck, back and tushie. It's been warm this summer (we melt at 80 in western Washington) so I've been glad she's not long all over.

I've had here groomed a second time and the groomer said she did great. I think starting her early and making sure I handled her all over has really helped.

I'm sure you'll get lots of great advice from the more experienced forum members too.

The earlier your pup gets used to clippers and being groomed, having a nail trim & ear cleaning the better!
Most breeders will start with a mini groom for pups at 3-4 weeks of age.
It's all part of the socialization process for a puppy.
For a cocker spaniel, grooming is a life long necessity, so your pup needs to have grooming be a positive experience from a young age.

You can help your pup to be used to grooming by gently brushing her, trimming her nails, bathing and drying her(it's a scary noisy dryer!), even if you like and want to keep her fluffy look.
She should also become used to clippers as well; so she isn't frightened by them when you do decide she needs a trim.
Possibly your breeder would be willing to trim her with clippers, if you are uneasy about doing that yourself.

I would hold off taking any pup to a grooming shop until she has her full series of puppy shots!

My puppy isn't home yet from the breeder yet but he's been clipped twice. I purchased a clipper of my own and hope to get him acclimated to me grooming him. I plan to introduce it to him without turning it on with lots of praise and some treats. I'll eventually turn it on with him in the room and built up to actually clipping him myself. Hopefully by that time, he'll be due for another trim and he won't go bonkers at the sight or sound of the tool.
