Hunter's coat changed last year when he went on thyroid pills. It started tangling more but it was manageable . That changed this summer,at first I thought that his coat was dirty so I bathed him more then I thought maybe I wasn't using enough conditioner but it's still getting worse. It started with little pin knots but still not too bad for the week but it has gotten worse as time goes by. Right now it is like if I look at him ,he gets huge mats or it mats like dreadlocks,it doesn't matter how often I comb him. The texture has also changed from hair to cottony. His thyroid levels are being checked next week.

I am at the point wondering if I should just shave him and start over hoping it will be better. I HATE to because his leg hair is about 8 inches long and never been cut.

How is he for grooming? If he hates it or is scared, you might be best to clip it off, though I understand how you will hate that, I have the same thing with George, who doesn't really enjoy grooming, but luckily it's mostly his belly hair that mats so nobody can see if that's clipped off, and I do love his long leg feathering. But if he is happy to be groomed then perhaps you can keep teasing the mats out and hope the coat will improve when he is on medication.

I would consider a supplement. Show Stopper produces very nice coats. The manufacturer has many fine products.

Has his food changed at all? Are there any other changes aside from medication since he STARTED the thyroid meds? Is it hypothyroidism? If so, your medication might need to be changed. There shouldn't be that type of reaction unless the medication isn't working properly.
