My daughter Riley is once again suffering migraines and what she calls "black outs" where she says her vision completely blacks out for a second repeatedly like a light switch is flicking on and off. She had a neurology appointment last week and developed a migraine on the way( I think it was the car sickness that started it off). It lasted for two days. She was given new meds rizatriptan for pain relief during migraine but she can only take it 4 or 5 times per month. And back on topamax. The new med only stopped migraine for an hour. Back to opthamlologist next morning and the migraine was much worse! She cried the whole time dr wasn't able to do much of an exam as she was in too much pain to dialete eyes or do visual field test. The neuro wanted to send her to Er for IV meds but let me try at home first with pain meds and benadryl and sleep. It did help for 20 min after she slept but migraine came back. Put her on prednisone and she has been better now weaning off the pred. I hope to never ever see her in so much pain again. She is having difficulty in school with this (only in math) because she has to focus so much. the meds are making it hard for her to concentrate also. I don't want her on meds that do that to her but we have to stop the migraines. we have to follow up with both docs soon.

Bless her heart! I do hope you can get answers SOON and a fix. I'll keep your daughter in my thoughts and prayers.

Adding my prayers for your little girl. No one should have to suffer like that - especially a kid.

I' sorry to hear this. It is NO fun being in so much pain all of the time. Definitely adding her to my prayers.

thank you all. I have gotten a note for school too, just in case she needs extra time to work on test or homework if she is having the "black out" or a migraine. Her grades in school are all in the nineties except for math which is in the 80s. I just dont want her penalized for not being able to complete her work or needing to "rest" her eyes. Math is really hard for her when a migraine or "black out" strikes the more she tries to concentrate the worse it gets. For now we are just going to have a meeting with teachers so they are aware of the problem she has and hopefully that is as far as it needs to go. I don't want to single her out or make her feel different from her friends.

Poor baby! Prayers coming that they find the right combo of treatment possibilities to give her some relief. As far as school, would it help to be in a room with low lighting for tests? Perhaps it would strain her eyes less.

My heart goes out to Riley, and you, too, her mother. Riley will certainly be in my prayers. I was a migraine sufferer most of my life (not to the extent of Riley's suffering, however). Hopefully and prayerfully the doctors will come up with a solution for Riley to relieve those terrible migraines.

Adding my prayers for your daughter too! As someone who has suffered migraines since I was only 14 I know how hard it can be to try and live a normal life. I hope you can get some answers and her teachers are able to understand and show her the compassion she needs. This is a long shot but have you looked into trigeminal neuralgia? It can cause some of the signs she's showing, it's hard to diagnosis but it may be something to look into.

Nicole I googled trigeminal neuralgia but that does not sound like my daughters symptoms. I too (and my mom) suffer from migraines. But I thank you and I will bring it up at her next doctor appointment. Her last bad migraine was over a week ago. It started on sunday when she complained of leg pain( i was thinking just that she didnt drink enough water) but I learned that dehydration can be a trigger so now I am constantly after her to drink water.
