My 86 yo grandmother fell down the stairs last night. Fractured her hip, shoulder and elbow. She needs surgery to fix her elbow and the doctor isn't sure how well they can fix it.

She's the last grandparent I have left and she's had a rough year. It made me so sad when they told me about last night's accident.

Prayers would be more than welcome... :hp

Sending prayers for your grandmother, Vicky. Is her elbow the only fracture they are going to fix at this point? My now-86 y/o mother-in-law had a hip replaced when she was 81 or 82 and she's done really well with it. I hope the doctors can get everything sorted out for her and alleviate her pain and discomfort.

Tina, I'm not exactly sure why her elbow needs surgery. It must be a bad fracture. And it's not really her hip that's fractured, it's her pelvic bone (is that the same thing?). The doctor said the other fractures should heal on their own but it will take a long time. After looking at her xrays, he told her she had very thin bones.

She has 13 children (all alive and well) and the entire family is worried at this point. I just hope she'll be ok. Thanks to all for the prayers.

Praying for your Grandma, Vicky. It's always so sad when an elderly person falls and breaks a bone/bones. Praying for wisdom for the doctors that they will do exactly the right thing for Grandma. I hope they keep her comfortable. God bless your dear Grandma. :hp

Ouch, poor dear. My dad had broken his pelvis (thrown from a horse) and the only repair was bed rest.

Prayers coming for your Grandmother and all of you. :hp

No, the pelvis is different from the hip and she'll probably require a lot of rest and eventually some PT. Also, depending upon how bad her shoulder is, PT might be able to keep her from having surgery there, too. It will be a fine line between having her do some weight bearing to keep her bones healthy, and resting so she doesn't do further damage. If she had 13 kids, she's a survivor - so that will serve her well!

I'm just seeing this so I hope are a but better by now. I will surely pray for her complete recovery. If it makes you feel any better my grandma did the same thing at 87 and broke her shoulder, hip and pelvis. She needed surgery to set the shoulder and stabilize the hip in the broken pelvis. She was walking within three months on a walker (had to have the shoulder heal) and lived to be 94. They made them tough!

So sorry for this event. My prayers for your family and for her. If they need to do surgery ismbecause the fracture ismvery complex. The pelvic bone usually heals on its own but is very painful. Find out if they are going to put her on non weight bearing on her lower extremities due to the pelvic fracture or if is ok to start standing and walking. The other thing is with an elbow fracture is going to be difficult to hold a walker. Which arm she fractured her dominant or not. This makes a great difference. Ask them to start physical therapy as soon as possible at least to start moving her and give you guys all specific instructions. If her bones are brittle viatamin D is important to absorb calcium as well as good sunlight on arms and legs. With winter on its way out it will be easier to exposed her to sunlight outside. Hope she does well. If she is veryndetermined and strong minded she will,be ok. Remember hydration and keeping her eating is crutial. These cases are my daily occurence at work, i am a physical therapist in a nursing rehab center and the childrens hospital. If you have any questions you can pm me.
