My sister has two Shar-Peis. The female, Harley, has not been well. In fact, about ten days ago my sister had an appointment to put her down. Suddenly she started eating again and has been appearing to be happy although has not gained the weight that she should as of yet.

Yesterday, my sister took her two dogs to a friend's house for an overnight visit to test and see how they would do there. When my sister is out of town she has relied on a tenant to take care of her dogs. She does not trust her tenant and finds that Harley does not like her at all. So, this was supposed to be a good alternative.

Well, at 6 a.m. when my sister's friend and her husband woke up, both dogs were missing! It is unclear how they got out because they were in a fenced in yard and had slept in the garage. (the friend's dogs had never escaped) They searched all day and finally, about two hours ago someone found Harley almost two miles away. Bosco, the male, was found about an hour later, he had been hit by a car, his hip is dislocated and one of his feet is crushed. He is in the hospital overnight. My sister is on her way to pick up Harley and go see him.

My sister and both dogs need your prayers full force, please!

TIA

Sylvia

Thank you, all! I spoke with my sister around 3 a.m. She had just left the hospital where Bosco is. He was hit in his rear and was told that he needs to have hip surgery, and ligaments replaced one one paw. They feel that if they adjust the hip manually (I guess its dislocated) that there is a 50% chance that it will get dislocated again. She was told that he needs to stay in the hospital for 8 weeks afterwards!!! Supposedly he'll have arthritis all his life as a result. He is 5 years old.

My sister lives in Granada Hills, CA. He is at the hospital where animal control took him in Torrance. I'm looking to find a good rehab place for her to take him to. Is anyone here familiar with that area and know who the best people are?

I called The Wizard of Paws here and got a referral to someone who is also in the 818 area code but she has not returned my phone calls. Any help in this area is greatly appreciated! Many of you have met my sister and her dogs since she comes to the shows that we go to in California and she also went to the Cocker Nationals in Virginia to support us.

You might try calling Cathy from Camp Cocker as she is very familiar with the San Fernando Valley area, and she may have some options for your sister.

On another note, from my 'glass half full perspective', sounds like if the vet manually adjusts Bosco's hip, there is a 50% chance that it will be okay. Maybetry that first and if it doesn't work, then they can do surgery.
I would wonder why Bosco has to stay at the vet's for 8 weeks; seems he would be much happier and then heal faster if he is in a home environment, as long as it is feasible for him to be there.

Just my thoughts.

An 8 week stay seems a bit much I don't think I'd agree to that

I'll keep that baby in my thoughts and prayers

My sister is pulling Bosco out of the hospital that he is in tomorrow and taking him to her regular vet. Her vet is in Riverside and she's been working with him for over 13 years. Bosco has been at this current place since Monday night and today, Wednesday, my sister's bill is almost $4000 and they have only put a splint on the one paw where the ankle seems to have a damaged ligament. It seems outrageous for basically just housing him.

Thank you all, I'll keep you updated. Please keep praying for all three.

Sylvia

Sylvia,

I think that $4,000.00 IS outrageous! :bang I would make them justify every expense in writing. Moonbeam had one year of treatment (including daily, weekly office visits) for her IMHA and then cancer. We also had an ear ablation surgery and the total cost was around $10,000.00. Check this "guy" out!

My thought is that they will probably not release Bosco with out the bill being paid. :bang If so, maybe your Sister can take legal action at a later time. Tell her to keep all documentation and a copy of Bosco's chart (X-rays), etc.

Guess you can tell that I an incensed over this..... :bang

Dawn :paw

Dawn, I think so too! When she told me last night I told her she should just go and pick him up. She's had to pay or give her credit cards in advance so they are making sure that they'll get her money. This is the hospital where Animal Control took him to so I was surprised that they charged so much. I must have been in dreamland.

My sister took Bosco out. Her regular vet does not do orthopedic surgery so she went to another vet that a friend of hers referred her to. This vet says that he hip has adjusted on its own and he is not too concerned about it he most likely will not need surgery. His concern is the right hind paw that has shattered bone in it. He also does not think that he'll need surgery to repair the ligament. He is charging my sister $700 for all that he is doing and keeping Bosco there for one night at no expense to her!!! What a difference. This vet is pleasant and thorough unlike the experience that she had at the other place.

Bosco was thrilled to be with my sister for a while and will be home permanently tomorrow. I bought a stroller for her to have that holds dogs up to 70 lbs in case she needs it. It should arrive there on Saturday.

Thank you all for your support, prayers and information.

Sylvia

OMG--sorry to see this so late. At this point, what type of services does Cathy need? My agility instructor is only about 20 minutes from her and most of the people in the class are from The Valley. As serious agility competitors, they know lots of vets/chiro/massage/ specialists.

Thanks, Colleen! She is going to need a good rehab place for Bosco. I found online a place that she called. Also, Maggie emailed me the name of the vet she trusts when in that area but she's looking for someone who is good with hips in particular. If you can get us in touch with whoever has information it would be great!

I'm so glad that things have improved to this point. It sounds as if your sister has gotten a few things settled out (thankfully) and I hope and pray it'sjust a matter of recovering at this point.
