My nephew just texted us to say that he won silver at the Artic Winter Games in the 3000 m relay. The games are being held in Whitehorse,Yukon this year with kids from all over the Arctic Circle including Alaska ,Northern Alberta,Nwt,Nunavut etc.He used to live in Cambridge Bay,Nunavut with his mother who is a teacher but last summer he decided he'd like to go to school in Nova Scotia for grades 11 and 12.This means my other 2 sisters drive him every Thursday night to Dieppe which is 2 hrs away for practice and then to any meets he may have. They have done this in all types of weather.
To go to the games he had to make a qualifying time and then last week he had to fly to Iqaluit to meet the team and train with them before they flew to Whitehorse. He wasn't sure if he would go because our mom died the week before and he didn't want to leave his mom who had flown home, but as we told him grandma was proud of him going to the games and would want him to go.I 'd like to think that his grandma was pushing him around the rink and making sure he didn't fall and get hurt.He arrives home late Sunday night and we'll celebrate then.

Congratulations! Hope you have a great celebration.

And it was just striking to see a post about a sporting event for students in the "Arctic Circle". This list really does have a wide reach.

If anybody is interested in seeing the list of sports and countries that compete goggle Whitehorse 2012 arctic winter games. They compete in sports most people would know but they also compete in dog mushing and Dene traditional sports like the ear pull and the standing high kick. These are really interesting to watch!

My good friend is coaching the Northern Alberta girls' soccer team up there! She is the lady I teach dog training classes for. She is very involved with the Arctic Winter Games.

Congrats to your nephew, Rhonda. Condolences on the loss of your Mom.

Rhonda congrats for your nephew's accomplishment. Hope he has the time of his life. He does have an angel keeping up with him and giving him an extra push. Sorry for your mother's loss.

Thanks everyone for your condolences. We all miss her,but Holly is lost without her.She laid at mom's feet all the time and now she avoids mom's chair but the saddest thing to watch is when she sits in front of the glass deck door and watches when the van comes in,its like she waiting for mom to come home. We were able to sneak the new cat up to the hospital with the nurses permission but Holly was too big.I wish we could have. The first time that mom saw Holly was when she was in the hospital having had back surgery,I snuck her in under my coat and laid her on the bed.
