Has anyone ever had a cat that lost its voice/meow? I adoped an older cat (8 or 9) and he is a BIG yowler, but the night before last his meow was barely audible and he has only meowed 4 times all day long. He is eating ok, but not his hard kibble and sleeping a lot today. He is somewhat of an outdoor cat, but stayed inside most of the day, even when it is nice outside. I thought maybe he has a sore throat. Any ideas or cat-cures? I plan to call the vet in the morning. Thanks.

I'd call the vet but sore throat sounds like a possibility

Got him into the vet this afternoon. Without actually putting him under and running a scope down his throat, the vet thought he just irritated his throat. He found his voice when I put him in the carrier. :lol2 If he had something stuck in his throat, I think he dislodged it while meowing in the carrier. Vet gave him an antibiotic shot in case there was something viral. He just meowed to go out to the bathroom, ate without throwing up and played!!! So, I think we are on the mend.
Thanks Deb.

Great news, Terry. I was going to "guess" a hairball was stuck and trying to work it's way up or down - but never having had a cat, that was just a wild guess. I'm glad he seems to be on the mend and is now talking to you again.

China didn't keep anything down last night, so got him back to the vet this a.m. Bloodwork won't be back until Monday (he needed a complete pannel anyway) but xrays of his throat, esophegus, stomach and intestines showed no blockages or tumors (thank God), just a tummy full of gas. Vet said he must have gotten ahold of something, possibly even a spider. So they gave him an anti-nauseau shot and he is on AD canned. Looks the same in the can as it would coming out the business end of the cat. :lol2 Pretty much what China thought of it too. Sniffed it, turned and sat in the bowl. :lol2 So, am off to the store for baby food. I know he is hungry as he hasn't been able to keep anything down for 3 or more days.
Thanks for your thoughts. My only thought is a $600 gas bubble. Oy

**UPDATE** He likes the baby food and seems to be holding it down. Baby steps to getting back to normal. I went to clean up his vomit mess from last night and discovered a very large fur ball that certainly would have blocked his trachea. I guess he had to throw up hard enough to expell it.

Oh dear! I wouldn't know what to feed a sick kitty, but baby food sounds like it did the trick. I agree with you on the canned food. Waylon's ID looks like twice-processed Spam - blecch. He loves it and that's all I care about at this stage of the game. Hopefully his bloodwork will come back ok and he'll start to be hungry again.

Terry, Sounds like it could be hairball trouble. I regularly give my cats a hairball remedy, once a week, it's a greasy Vaseline textured formula that they make for cats. They clean and lick themselves so much and can get quite bound up from all the hair they ingest. Check with your vet, but I'm wondering if he is all blocked up. When I've had trouble, I have given my cats a daily dose until they are better, but again just call your vet to double check. Those hairballs can sure cause some trouble. They vomit because the food can't get through the digestive tract. Good luck!!

I do give him a hairball treatment a couple of times a week, sometimes more. Since going to the vet, he has been grooming himself like crazy.
Baby food was working last night, but I'm guessing that his tummy is still filled with gas because he refused to eat this morning and he's acting like his tummy still hurts (lays with all 4's tucked under him and ears back).

Does anyone know what I can do to help the gas dissolve or pass? X-rays showed that his tummy was full of gas, but his intestines were clear from any blockages.

Maybe he needs a probiotic or a food change altogether? Again, those are both guesses as I've never had a cat. I think there are products that help alleviate gas, too. One is called Curtail (or something along those lines), and some of the probiotics might help as well. You're not giving him anything with milk in it are you? I've been told they can't digest milk.

Hoping China feels better today! If it is a hairball they can have several to get out, but I would think they should see on xray. Have you tried the liquid from tuna? the water not oil kind. Its the one thing mine always go for and maybe it would help to hydrate him alittle. I had a kitty a long time ago who constantly had hairballs but she loved vaseline! Just plain she would lick right off my finger. Pumpkin is good for them too if he will eat it.
feel better kitty cat,
Becky

He was eating the tuna with water when he got blocked. I tried the pumkin and he turned his nose at it. I feed him Natural Balance (Chicken and Pea) and he absolutely loves it (kibble). His intestines weren't blocked, it just got stuck in his throat and it blocked everything to his stomach, that is why he had the gas build-up. I kept him on babyfood until Sunday night and I finally gave him his kibble, so that must have moved the gas through. I would hate to change his food right now. I just need to find a better treat that will treat the hairballs. I'm trying to brush him more too.

He has his meower back, he's playing and eating well, so thankfully, back to normal. Big plus side is we seem to have made another step closer in bonding, even after going to the vet and being poked. It is a good feeling to see how much he has progressed with a warm home, good food and love.

Thank you all for your advice and support. :hi
