Does anyone have any pros or cons on one of the Medical Alert systems out there?
We are thinking of getting alerts for my parents, and looking for any comments to help us decide on a system.

Thanks for your help!

My Mom has had one for years. The one that she has is a two-piece system. There is a transmitter that she wears on her wrist, and a base station that will call the help center if she pushes the button on her wrist unit. She also had the option of wearing the transmitter on a cord around her neck, but she found that her dog would accidentally trigger it when she picker her up.

The unit is very sensitive, and has a good range. If Mom pushes the button, someone from the call center is immediately talking to her via "speaker" from the base station and can hear her pretty much anywhere in the house. The call center will call 911, and then also calls me. The wrist unit is water proof, so she can wear in in the shower, and the batter lasts a very long time. When the battery needs replacing, someone from the call center will even contact her to let her know. I don't remember which company it is, but I can get the name if you want it.

The only downside is that it only works when she's home. If she's out in her car, or shopping, it doesn't. There is a different style that actually uses a cell-phone signal to transmit, and that one will work anywhere. From what I've heard of that type, however, the battery needs to be charged on a regular basis, and it's not water proof.
